NOTES FROM THE PLAINS. • SATURDAY S MATCHES. SENIORS : Waitakaruru 3, v. Kerepeehi 3. Ngatea 0, v. West 0. United Coast 9, v. Turua 0. • JUNIORS: Ngatea 10, v. West 0. - Waitakaruru 3, v. Kerepeehi 0. On Saturday, when the second at the series of inter-club matches arranged by the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union were played, the weather was showery, but little rain fell during play, and, if anything, the fields were improved by the conditions. At all .the matches the attendance was large, and good play was witnessed.
KEREPEEHI V. WAITAKARURU.

Steedman. in the Kerepeehi-Waitakarnru mutch at Mr A. McClean’s paddock, Waitakaruru, play opened fast, and _ tlie game proved a hard, clean struggle between evenly matched teams. Early in the first spell a good kick by C. Stretton compelled Kerepeehi co. force. Shortly afterwards Waitakaruru gained a free kick, but Quintall’s attempt fell short. A good rush, with plenty of combination, followed advantageous line play, and Kerepeehi again saved by forcing.. The second quarter’ was equally as fast, but again both teams showed lack of finishing touches and three more forces were registered. Waitakaruru gained an opportunity to score with a free kick from the twenty-five line, but Stretton er attempt was diverted by the cross-wind. The first try was secured earlY Hi> the second half, E. Staucell following' up a kick, and beating several Waitakaruru players for the batt. W. Murphy failed to convert. Waitakaruru quickly evened up the score with a try by W. Rhind whicn QuintaU ftiled to convert. Ir the final round the vigour of the plavers >was not lessened, out no further scores were registered. showed an improvement on theuast match, and the standard of - play vats satisfactory.-' Mr D. G. McMillan was referee. In the junior 'match K. McCollum secured the only try for Wiatakaruru in a clean hard-fought game. As in the senior match the lack of finish Was conspicuous. The; game was .the first of the season for the Kerepeehi juniors, but- thjy showed distinct promise, while the Waitakaruru team shewed great improvement, probably due to the mid-week instructional lectures. No tries were secured in this match, pla? r ed at Kopuarahj. and the home team secured, ita win with threie successful penalty kicks, two of which . were by.B, Wallis from nearly halfway. The game was fast and hard, . but not rough. Coast had the better of it, and kept Turua on the defensive practically throughout -Both teams made many infringements in the early part of the game, out quickly found that it did not pay, and as the game progressed there were - fewer .penalties. Cook, P« Lecwwi, There was no score -in this game, played at Kaihere. The West .forward’s ran all over the Ngatea pack, but the visiting. toaiiJi’-g backs were superior. •' Mr J. N. As in the "seniors,' the Ngatea junior backs were, stronger and the forwards weaker than their opponents Good following up enabled Christie and S- McKerchar to score for Ngatea, and both tries were converted by Courtenay. Mr C. Bertelsen was referee.
A meeting of the Union will be held to-morrow evening, when many masters will be brought up. It. will oe necessary to come to a decision with regard to the Poland Cup competition, in view of the Thames Valley Rugby Union meeting next week. It has been suggested that competitions should be arranged for school teams and third-grade teams* ’ The suggestion that home referees should be apopinted for club matches is receiving strong support from many quarters. Interest amnog the public in football matters its very marked this season, and enthusiastic support is being • given to the many functions organised to raise funds.
