WAITAKABURU. TELEGRAPH INTERRUPTION. Telegraph and telephone wires were broken by a ship at Waitakaruru on Tuesday morning. For some months past there has been a pile of telegraph poles lying on the wharf, with the ends protruding over the edge and preventing ships from coming close alongside the wharf when coming upstream. The Hauraki Shipping and Towing Association’s o.v. Heda was coming up with the tide, but could not get close enough to the wharf for a man to jump ashore and make, the mooring line fajst, and before tlic, reversal of the engines had any effect the masts crashed into and broke tne telegraph and telephone wires which cross tiie stream near the bridge. Had the vessel not been stopped by the wires it would have crashed into the bridge, which from all appearances would not stand much of a knock. Tne wires broken included the Thames and Bay of Plenty Morse circuits, the Auckland-Paeroa and the Waitaka-ruru-Turua telephone circuits, and many wires that have been erected in connection with the new telephone exchange which is to be opened shortly. TELEPHONE EXCHANGE. It is expected that there 'will be over 50 subscribers to the Waitakaruiu telephone exchange when it is opened. These will include settlers from as far distant as New Brighton. The service will be commenced as soon as a cable is laid across the road under the electric power lines. It is understood that a new telephone line to Auckland will be connected to the Waitakaruru exchange. FOOTBALL.
