A reminder is given that the annual meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union is to he held in the Soldiers’ Club this evening.
The Rev. D. Calder, formerly Presbyterian minister at Reefton, >Vangani’i. and Mosgiel, who has succeeded the Rev. A. T. Thompson as general secretary of the British and Foreign Bi!)le Society (N,Z, auxiliary), is a visitor to Paeroa to-day.
The annual meeting of householders for the election of a school committee will be held in the Soldiers’ Club. Paeroa, on Monday, May 4. Nominations for seats on the committee will close with the secretary, care of “Gazette” office, and from whom nomination foi ms are obtainable, on Monday next. April 27.*
The attendance at the local "district high school on Monday was considered very satisfactory, especially in view of the short notice given. There were 53 pupils who answered the roll call in the secondary department and 320 in the primary school, an attendance of over 75 per cent, of the total number.
The following resolution was moved by Mr R. W, Evans at last night’s meeting of parishioners of St. PaulV Church, Paeroa: “That tiffs meeting of parishioners of St. Paul’s Church, Paeroa. respectfully offero its congratulations to the Rt. Rev. Dr, Averill upon his elevation to the dignity of an Archbishop, and earnestly prays that under Divine Providence lie may be spared for many years to exercise the functions of that high office.” Seconded by Mr A. P. Grant.
Prior to the commencement Of business at last night’s meeting of the parishioners of St. Paul’s Church the vicar. (Rev. F. B. Dobson) moved -a resolution of sincere sympathy witlr the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey in his lengthy and severe illness, and expressed the hope that he would soon be restored to health and strength. Mr Dobson said that he confidently believed every penson in New Zealand adirmed Mr Massey, and regarded him as a. thoroughly openhearted Englishman who had carried out untold work for the development-and advancement of Now Zealand. The motion was carried in silence.
A service of induction of the Rev. Costain will be conducted by the Rev. A. Ashcroft, chairman of the Methodist district, in the Methodist Church, Paeroa, tomorrow evening.
The. Railway Department advises that there will be no inward or outward trains from Paeroa on Saturday, Anzac Day, and the goods-shed and offices will be closed all day.
The latest London’ week-end cable states that the price for Anchor butter is 168 s, unsalted 176 ; Danish 178 s. Market shows more activity, but Some week sellers at 1645. White and coloured cheese weak, 102 s.
