KIRIKIRI BRIDGE.

&— PLAINS ALLOCATION AGREED TO. WHOLE COUNTY RATEABLE. Bridge matters occupied thee attention of the Hauraki Plains County Council for a brief period at its meeting last week. The Minister fur Public .Works wrote in reference, to the council s communication of March 22, 1924, wherein the council agreed to contribute £12,009 towards the of the Kirikiri bridge. He stated that he was now in a position to supply further particulars, as follows: — “The bridge will consist of 25 spans of 60ft each, with ,a swinging span of 131 ft. The width of reading will be 12ft, with five wide spans at intervals for the passage of traffic. The bridge will consist of concrete pile piers, superstructure of steel plate girders, with decking of concrete. The estimate for the completed br’dge is £52,000, towards which the contributions are proposed to be : Thames County, £6OOO ; Hauraki Plains and Thames Borough, £12,000 each; and Main Highways Board, £22.000.

‘■rhe construction will be carried ou! by the Public Works Department. Contributions from local bodies should be paid in advance. The construction will take.at least two years, and it is proposed that 25 per cent, of the proposed contribution be paid at the actual commencement of the work, and the balance in three equal, payments at six-month intervals thereafter.”

The council was asked if the conditions were agreeable.

Cr. Hare pointed out that it had been agreed that the plans should be agreed to by the council. He thought they should object to the narrowness of the structure. Ors. McLoughlin and Harris pointed out that the three local, bodies had agreed.to iind the sums mentioned If the departme.it would build the bridge. They did not think tne objection would receive much consideration. Members agreed that, more passing places would be desirable. Cr. Parfitt expressed the opinion that the offer of the department was fair. When the local bodies’ offers were made the cost of the bridge was unknown. Ci'; Parfitt moved, and Cr. Harris seconded, that the council take steps to raise its quota of £12,000, and that the whole county be pledged for the rate. The motion was carried, Cr. Hare voting against and desiring his vote, recorded. Cr. Harris moved that the council agree to the conditions as stated in the Minister’s letter. Seconded by Cr. Hayward and carried. MAUKORO BRIDGE. The Public Works Department forwarded for the council’s information a copy of a warrant authorising . the Piako. County Council to construct a bridge, together with approaches, on the Maukoro deviation, and apportion the cost in. terms of section 119 of tne Public Works Act. The warrant provided that the Hauraki Plains and Piako counties bear the cost of the bridge and the approaches equally, and th,at any contribution , required to be paid by the Plains county to be paid out of the funds of the county within one nionth of receipt, of demand in .writing from the Piako county.

Cr. Parfitt moved that a committee be set up to consider the rating areas for the Maukoro, Pipiroa, and Ngarua bridges.

Cr. McLoughlin said that Maukoro would.be an outlet for the county, and should be a charge over the whole county. He suggested deferring discussion until Cr. Mayn was present, Cr. Parfitt agreed, and the matter was dropped.
