PAEROA BOROUGH.
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL.
Tile regular meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held on Thursday evening, His Wonship the iMayor (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over Crs. T. P. Vuglar, H. M. Shand, G. P. Lamb. F. E. Flatt, P. E. Brenan. J. W. Silcock, E. Edwards, and the town clerk. Mr W. C. Alexander. LOAN MONEY. The Superintendent, State Advances Office, advised that the Minister forFinance had consented to the payment of interest at a rate not exceeding six per cent, per annum on a loan of £2OOO for sewerage connections and one of ’£6ooo for water reticulation, and that Orders-in-Council proscribing that rate were being prepared for submission to the Executive Council. ACCESS SOUGHT. W. L. Buchanan, Paeroa, sought permission to construct an Bft sledge track from near Bennett Street east to the boundary of G. Buchanan’s to enable firewood to be sledged out. The Mayor said that it would mean a side cutting through a portion of the municipal reserve, which was suitable for afforestation purposes. The matter was referred to a special committee, with to act. HILL STREET WATER SUPPLY.
Major C. E. Andrews, corner of Kennedy and Hill streets wrote drawing attention to the fact that some five months ago the water pipe supplying water to his property had been diseoi.nected owing to street construction work, and he requested that the supply be restored as early as possible.—Connection made. STATION ROAD DRAIN. Mrs S. M. McCaskill wrote complaining of the state of the drain fronting her property in Station Road and pointing out that, in cleaning the drain the earth had beep piled up to a height of 20ft across, depriving her of. the use of 60ft by 20ft of the property. She asked that the drain be piped and filled in, and stated that in its present state she was, unable to let her house to tenants with children owing to the danger that existed. The Mayor.said .that the matter had been gone into, and it was impossible to consider work undertaken 30 or 40 years ago would be equitable to-day.
It was resolved to reply that tne council saw no reason to alter its previous decision. OPUKEKO DRAIN. Kennedy Bros., Thames Road, wrote requesting payment of one-third share for the cleaning of the drain near Bush Street, together with the usual subsidy of £2 10s for the cleaning of the Opukeko drain. —Referred to the Works Committee for a report. PRIVATE CROSSING. J. P. Gamble wrote stating that he regretted having broken the by-laws by erecting a crossing to his motor garage in Willoughby Street and stating that he was willing to correct the matter on receipt of advice from the council. • • The foreman was instructed to see that the council’s wishes were properly carried out. TAXI LICENSE. C. Burt wrote enclosing a cheque, for £2 12s 6d and requesting a renewal of hfe taxi license. He pointed out that last year, acting on the opinion of the counsel to the Municipal Association, he had challenged the council’s right to .make any extra charge on outside taxis, but up to the present he had received no further advice from the council, although it had undertaken to look into the position.— Referred to the town clerk. APPLICATION FOR CROSSING. B. Dunlop applied for permission to erect a crossing at the rear of his residence in Williams Street extension.
It was decided to advise the writer to apply to the Railway Department, which controlled that area. TAYLOR’S AVENUE.
Messrs F. E. Flatt, E. Ed,war,ds, aiid R. Rasmussen wrote stating that in the course of the formation of the footpath in Taylor’s Avenue their fences were becoming buried. They requested that the fences be removed in the meantime and re-erected on the correct boundaries on completion of the work.
The Mayor stated that satisfactory written arrangements had been made with the Railway Departinent, afad the owners of the properties had been duly advised. RAWHITIROA BLOCK.
The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote requesting that the gum of £230, together with Crown grant fee’ of £1 Is. be forwarded to the Receiver of Land Revenue, so that the title to Rawhitiroa block A, Nos. 3 and 2B could be completed. BOUNDARY COMMISSION.
The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of the Order-in-Council allocating the costs of the commission which sat to determine the boundaries between the Ohincnreri County and the Borough of Paeroad. The commission which sat to consider the matter of the inclusion of the railway land within the boundaries of the borough ordered that its costs should be paid by the borough, and an account for such costs would also be forwarded at an early date. WILLIAM STREET SUB-WAY. The district engineer, N.Z. Railways, wrote in reference to the proposed sub-way at William Street and advised that a cl,ear span of 23ft would be provided. The actual widths of the footpath and roadway would be left to the decision of the council. Tne letter stated that as it was necessary to import the joists for the long span some delay in tlie completion, of the sub-way would be inevitable. It was resolved that the letter be received, and that the protest in regard to the delay in closing the stopbank gaps be endorsed, and the verbal assurance given by the assistant engineer that no delay would occur be recorded, which was in detail thht if necessary the span would be tresfielled underneath in the centre.
MOTOR LORRY RRQUTjATIONS. The Chief Engineer, Public Works
Department, forwarded a copy of the regulation# as to ,the use of motor lorries in accordance with the Act, and pointed out that it was important that accurate records and accounts should be kept of all applications received for heavy traffic licenses, licenses issued, fees paid, and particulars of the operation of motor lorries. MAIN HIGHWAYS. The Riccarton Borough Council forwarded the following resolution and asked for support:— .., “That this council protests against the injustice of the policy adopted by the. Main Highways Board in refusing to assist, cities and boroughs which have main highways running through their districts, and requests Parliament to have the Main Highways Act amended so as to compell the board to give consideration to applications from cities and boroughjs.”
It was decided to support the resolution and to forward it to the Min- v istcr for Public Works and Mr H. Poland M.P., and also to make application for a subsidy on last year's . maintenance on the proposed main highways papssing through the borough. DANGER FROM LIVE WIRES. The Chief Electrical Engineer, Public Works Department, forwarded a circular pointing out the danger that existed in erecting scaffolding near live electric wires and directing the precautions that were to be exercised to guard against the danger of possible accidents. GEORGE STREET DRAIN. '’r. Vuglar drew attention to the deplorable state of the roadside drain in George Street, and asked if it could be cleaned out The Mayor said that the matter would be referred to the foreman, with instructions to attend to it in duo course.
