POLICE COURT.

MONDAY, APRIL 6, 1925. (Before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M.) The following cases were heard at the local Police Court this morning : FAILURE TO MAINTAIN. H. D. Sorensen was charged with failing to provide adequate maintenance for his wife and four children under an order of £2 a week as from August 6, 1923. Mr E. A. Porritt appeared for the complainant and said that the sum of £8 had been paid. The cas© was struck out. FAILING TO REGISTER. Viggo Lumbye, farm labourer, Tirohia, was charged with failing to register, as required under the Defence Act, 1909. The defendant alleged ignorance of the regulations. Staff Sergt.-Major Busby stated that defendant had failed to register when lie readied the age of 14 years, but had registered in January of. this year. He was at present working outside the territorial limit. Defendant was convicted and finedcosts amounting to 7s. A similar charge was preferred aaginst Albert- John Hardman, factoryhand, Karangahake. who also pleaded ignorance of the requirements of the Act. , '' Scrgt-Major Busby intimated that defendant had since registered, and the Magistrate, entered a convlctioti and fined defendant 7s costs. TRESPASS ON RACECOURSE. Joseph Augustus Cleary, flax-cutter, Tirohia, was charged-with trespassing on the course of the Qhinemuri Jockey Club during the progress of the race meeting last, month, when he was a person excluded under the regulations. Mr C. N. O’Neill appeared for the defendant and entered a plea of guilty.

Police Sergeant Maclean handed fa a list of previous convictions, and stated that defendant was an undesirable in that he was a heavy drinker and cadger. The police had ordered him off the Tc Aroha racecourse on two occasions during the recent race meeting in Te Arbha. Defendant was later arrested for drunkenness at Te Ar oh a.

On the application of Mr O’Neili the case was adjourned to Te A'rohh, to be heard on Monday, May 4, as a similar charge was pending against defendant at that court.
