HAURAKI DRAINAGE.

MEETING OF BOARD.

The regular meeting of the Hauraki Drainage Board was held at Turua on Friday. Air G. Gray presiding over Messrs D. G. McMilan, R. H. Heappey, J. Aluleis, R. H. Baker, and the clerk, Air J. E. Green.

SLAUGHTERHOUSE DRAINAGE.

Air C. Scott wrote applying for permission to run a drain into one of the board's drains outside the flood-gate to take the drainage from his slaughterhouse. At present he was draining direct to the river, but. the pipes frequently became blocked. Members pointed out that if the flood-gate at any time did not close the Board’s drain would be fouled. At present the gate was. not working. It was also pointed out that practically all the gates Werei in an unsatisfactory state owing to lack of attention. It was impossible to obtain the services of a man to attend to them. The question of placing a grating on each side of the gates was discussed, but the disadvantages of this were obvious. It was alleged by several members that a number of gates had been deliberately blocked open to permit water to flow up, so that stock could be watered, and st wa>s suggested that an example should be made of some of the offenders. It was decided to defer consideration of the request. Arrangements were made for repairing several flood-gates and renewing others, and the area members were authorised io make the best arrangements possible for giving regular attention to the ga>s in the various areas. WHAREPOA CULVERTS. The Horahia Drainage Board wrote asking if any reservation had been placed on the offer to contribute an amount equal to the Horahia Board for the replacement of the existing culverts, at the Wharepoa ferry corner with -I'tt: pipets. Mr McMillan said that at the conference the agreement had not been coupled .with the deepening of the drain below the culverts. At that time the estimate of cost was not as much as was disclosed at the council meeting and it was on this low estimate that the agreement had been made. He was of the opinion that his area would only be called upon to pay about £lO. Since then the council had found that the pipes would cost only £126. He did not see why his area should be penalised to provide the facilities for the Horahia Board. The matter was discussed at length, and was finally left to Mr McMillan. OBJECTION TO SPOIL. Mr A. J. Heasman wrote objecting to the depositing of spoil from the Thames Valley drain other than ordinary cleanings on his sections, and to the throwing of weeds on to his fences. A PRIVATE DRAIN. Air J. Kdrnick waited upon the board with reference to the proposed extension of the Jubilee drain beyond the board’s area to his farm. He was prepared to boar the total cost. Mr Kernick’s land is in the Hora--11 inu Board’s area, and it had been suggested that that board should utilise the proposed drain and extend it. Mr Mules reported having spoken to Mr Kne ; ebohe, who had pointed out that if the Horahia Board took over the, drain it would be adverse to compensating Mr Kernick for the money he would expend, as it .would have to still further enlarge the drain to cope with the back water.

Mr Kernick said that some arrangement of permanent benefit would be preferable. ; Mr Mules said he had inspected the area, and had come to the opinion that it would pay the Horahia Board to make a new” drain to the river from the flood-gate. The existing floodgate was of sufficient size to cope with the water from Mr Kernick’s land. He moved that the clerk write to the Horahia Board stating that f it desired to utilise the. Jubilee drain a new outlet from the flood-gate <o the river would be necessary. Ou the motion of Mr Mules the board granted Mr Kernick the right to extend the Jubilee drain as he desired, subject to certain conditions safeguarding the board. ACCOUNTS. The passing of accounts and the authorisation of progress payments on drain cleaning works completed the business. - ■
