ARROW ROCK DAM.
A GREAT AMERICAN WORK.
IRRIGATING A BARREN COUNTRY.
While in America recently Mr S. D. McMiken took the opportunity oT visiting Arrow Rock Dam, on. the Boise River, in Idaho Shite. It is situated 17 miles from the City of Boise, the capital of Idaho. This is reputed to bq the highest dam in the world, and was built for irrigation purposes to supply the Boise Valley, and has turned what was barren sagebush country into ground that, will grow anything.
During the erection by the Federal Government of the United States there was a power plant of 3000-h.o. transmitting at 22,000 volts to Arrow Rock.- A sawmill was erected which cut 5% million feet, of timber. This wan used in erecting the camps and dam construction. The camp was erected to house 700 workmen and families, and was complete with hospital, bath houses, post office, heating plant, water supply, and fire appliances. Following are some of the dimensions :— Height. 351 ft; thickness at base, 240 ft; width at top, 16ft; radius of curve 662 ft; length of crest, 1060 ft; length of ispillway, 400 ft; depth of foundation, 80ft. The quantities are gives as follows : 280',000 cubic yards; concrete, 340,000 cubic yards ; gates, •weight, 1000 tons; capacity of dam, 230.000 acre feet (acre Ift deep) , length of reservoir, 18 miles.
