CHAMPION OF GOLDFIELDS.
W. PURDIE WINS TITLE.
One of the greatest events of the bowling season in this district is the Champion of Champions competition, which is competed for each year by the singles winners in the Paeroa, Te Aroha, Hikutaia, Matamata, Morrinsvillc. and Waihi clubs. AV. Purdie, who has been playing consistently good bowls this season, represented the local club in the competition, which was played at Matamata on Saturday. The weather was ideal for bowling, and the green was in firstclass playing condition. The competition was played in five, rounds, and Purdie went through without a loss, defeating Stewart (Matamata), who has held the championship for the last two yeans. Following are the scores:—
First Round.—Stewart (Matamata) 17, v. Robinson (Hikutaia) 7; Purdie (Paeroa) 15, v. Moncrief (Morrinsville) 9 ; Heathcote (Te Aroha) 17, v. Smith (Waihi) 13. Second Round.—Robinson 19, v. Moncrief 14 ; Heathcote 16, v. Stewart 5 : Purdie 15, v. Smith 14, Third Round. —Heathcote 14, v. Robinson 12; Purdie 15, v. Stewart 14: Smith 15, v. Moncrief 10. Fourth Round—Purdie 15, v. Robinson 14 ; Moncrief 18, v. Heathcote 7 : Smith 11, v. Stewart 10. Final Round. —Purdie 16, v. Heathcote 7.
Air Purdie was the recipient of hearty congratulations from all sides on his splendid performance, and great excitement prevailed on the local green when news was received' that Purdie had won the honour for his club.
