MOTORING ACCIDENTS.

TWO CARS OVERTURN IN BRAIN. BAD SMASH AT NETHERTON. With the increase: of motor traffic on the roads, especially on such occasions as race meetings, motor accidents nowadays are looked upon as part of the holiday. A series of motor accidents, some unfortunately attended by serious results, occurred in this district yesterday. The most serious smash so far reported occurred on the Awaiti-Nether-ton road, opposite Mr H. A. Morrison’s residence, last evening. From details available it appears that a car driven by Mrs Tom O’Carroll, of Kopuarahi, was returning home fiom the races when a large car, owned by Mr E. C. Marshall, Pipiroa, and driven by Mr Joe Ivan, travelling at a fast, pace in the same direction, endeavoured to Pass. Ivan struck the car with such force as to push it over Into the drain at the side of the road, completelycapsizing the car and its occupants. The force of the impact caused the second car to slew round, and before the driver could regain control it, too, ran into the drain and turned a somersault. It was at once seen, that a serious accident had occurred, and very quickly willing hands from following cars, together with Mr Hans Morrison, who lives opposite and heard the sound of the collision, gave assistance in extricating the occupants of the wrecked cars. The most seriously injured in Mrs "b’Carroll’s car were Miss Mitchell, Kopuarahi, severe bruises, slight concussion, and broken nose; Mrs Coorabes, bruises; and Mr E. E. O’Carroll, deep cuts in left hand and forearm, and bruises. The suffereis were taken into the residence of Mr Morrison and were later attended by 'Dr. Little, of Paeroa. Fortunately the occupants of Mr Marshall's car, four in number, were thrown dear, with the exception of .Mr Ivan, who was pinned underneath the wreckage, face downwards in the drain. Had V. not been for the timely assistance of Mr 'H. Morrison and his brother Mr. Ivan would have drowned in. the two feet of water. By an almost superhuman effort the Morrison brothers succeeded in lifting the car sufficiently for Ivan to be extricated. An examination of his injuries revealed severe skin abrasions and bruises, and it ; s feared that some ribs are broken.' The occupants of that car, together with the injured driver, were conveyed to Turua by Mr G. Sarjant, and were attended to by Dr. Valentine. ACCIDENT NEAR RACECOURSE. The only motor ’ accident at the racecourse so- far recorded, happened last night as the crowd was returning home. It appears that a taxi owned by Mr W. Lennon, Paeroa, and driven by Mr W. H. Taylor, junr./was return-, ing from the railway- station and. was. proceeding along Thames Road at a moderate pace, and when nearing the intersection, of Thames Road and Raroa Road a young man named .T. Adamis, who was walking along the footpath, suddenly- dived across the road with the intention of reaching Raroa Road. The motor traffic was ■pirlictrtaily heavy just at this juncture, and Adams ran ,across right >n front of the approaching car. Mr Taylor seeing that an accident w.as immiiiei't, swerved the car outwards in an endeavour to miss the man, but Adams, realising the proximity of the on-coming c.ar, hesitated for a second, and then continued on, with the result that he was struck a glancing blow and thrown on to the road. The car wins promptly pulled up, and the victim was assisted to his feet. Although badly shaken, Mr Adams was able to walk to the grandstand, where he was attended to by Dr. G. T. Smith. The injuries received consisted of bruises and a sprainejd left wrist Interviewed after the occurrence, Mr Adams admitted that, he. had done a foolhardy action in trying tc cross the road without greater care in face of. such heavy traffic. CAR OVERTURNS. A report was received this morning that a large car returning to Auckland from Paeroa last night got off the crown of the road! near Waitakaruru, and when trying to regain tne metal the four-wheel brakes iVere applied, with- the result that the car overturned. It is believed that the occupants were unhurt, but the car w,"s badly damaged. CAPSIZE ON TE AROHA ROAD. It appears that a Ford car, carrying five passengers, was travelling at a fast rate from Te Aroha to Paeroa yesterday morning, and when near Waitoki tiie car got out of control and, running up a bank near the side of the road, capsized. The car was damaged, but no definite information can be ascertained as to whether the occupants were injured.
