WORKS IN THE COUNTY.

ENGINEEB’S REPORT.

Mr E, Shaw, engineer to the Ohinemuri County Council, reported to the meeting last Thursday as follows ;—

‘Several plans for works under Government grants are in course of preparation. The grading of the unmetalled portion of Kaimanawa Road is completed. A start was made with the diversion of the: creek and the removal. of the, present bridge to its new site and renewal of same on the Waimata road. A platform bridge on the Waitawheta road was in a dangerous state, and the same was replaced with 36!n concrete pipes. Also a wooden culvert on the Thames road at Komata collapsed, and was renewed with 21in concrete pipes.

"Levels were taken and plans prepared foy the deepening of Cadman Road drain. Tenders were not called on account of the subsidy offered by one of . the settlers concerned not coming .to hand.

‘’Ohinemuri Gold and Silver Mines, Ltd., Maratoto, re grant for Maratoto Road : After an inspection an application for £l5O was made, and a letter from the Minister for Mines will come before you to-day in reply, giving his reasons for the refusal.

"Concerning Mr T. Long’s application for repairs to Te Whariki Track . Ou inquiry I learn that an option was taken for the purchase of the machinery for removal which is now lying on the ground unassembled. Under the circumstances I would not recommend any expenditure.—-It was agreed to take no further action.

"In company with the Health Inspector I made an inspection of the head works of the Paeroa water supply, and samples of the water were taken for analysis. A reply has come to hand with the result, which states that it is first-class water, and free from contamination.

! "The wheels, or the road roller were forwarded to Thames to A. and G. Price, Ltd., to ascertain which would be the better - job, to re-tyre ?r put new rims on. After going into the matter the recasting of new rims was thought to be better and cheaper - , and after consulting the chairman the firm was notified to proceed with the work. There will be a considerable saving in cost oi manufacture and freight compared with sending the wheels to Andeison, Ltd., Christchurch, and the new tyre will be 2% inches in thickness against 2 inches from the latter firm.

‘The metalling from Ncthciton Bridge to Hubbard’s Boad is compleied, and in.due course it will be raked in and rolled, rh.r n.parrs to Hu-rbard’s Road with metal is being proceeded with, . and also Olu le Arolia Road.

"It will be necessary to have the foundation of the centre pier of Ac Komata bridge attended to, as tne same has sunk on. the loti side through the foundation being scoured out. While on this rsubjeet it will be as well to keep in view that a new bridge will be required in the near future. —Authorised to carry out necessary repairs.

■‘As there are several wheelbarrows required throughout the county would ask your permission to secure, say, half a dozen. The price for same could be obtained locally.”—Authoritv granted to obtain quotations.
