DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

MEETING OF PAEROA COMMITTEE.

: A meeting of the committee of the Paeroa District High School was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday ■■ evening, Mr E. E, Gillmau presiding overs Messrs C. H. Pascoe, R ,T. Thorp, W. T. Power, N. C. Busby, I R, G. Southby, W. Purdie, and W. L. Lawrence (secretary). Mi' G. H. Taylor and G. R. Preston were also present. The chairman brielly welcomed Mr Preeton to Paeroa, and hoped that his term as master in the secondary department would be a happy one. ' Mr Preston responded, saying he realised that he had a “hard row to hoe' to fill the position vacated »y Mr Wilks, but he would do his utmost to give satisfaction. CLAIM FOR RENT. A letter was received from R. Whitten, New South Wales, requesting that the rent for a cottage which had been occupied by Mrs H. D. Sorensen during the time she was employed as caretaker’ of the school be at once remitted to him. ■. An explanation of the position by the secretary showed that .there was no rent due, and it was decided to take no action. CLEANING- OF SCHOOLS.

A letter from the Education Board covering a circular issued by thq Department of Health relative to the cleaning of schools' and the liberal use of disinfectants during the infantile paralysis epidemic was read. The secretary ■ reported that the school had been scrubbed throughout, in conformity with the board’s regulations. ■ The circular was referred to the headmaster, with power to take such steps,as he considered' desirable. provision of cocoa: Mr Thorp introduced the question of providing a supply of hot cocoa for pupils attending school during the winter months, and a lengthy discussion ensued as to the practicability and the financing of the undertaking. The matter of heating apparatus for the school was also discussed. Mr Thorp offered to donate a' copper to the school to assist in overcoming the difficulty of providing the hot water. A sub-committee, comprising the 'Chairman, secretary, and Mr Busby, 'was set up to confer with the headmaster and bring down a report at the April meeting. ; Mr Thorp was thanked for his offer to provide a copper. SCHOOL GROUNDS. L’he question of clearing the stormwater drains and generally tidying up the grounds prior to the reopening of school was discussed, and it was resolved that the headmaster and secretary be authorised to engage a man to do the necessary work. ■T: LIGHTING OF SCHOOL. Owing to the, closing of the gasworks the question of lighting and heating at the school was discussed. L It was resolved that the board be written to and the position explained, with a request that at least three lighting points and two heating points be provided. It was also decided to apply for a chimney and stove for heating the high school room. SCREEN FOR BICYCLES. . Tire chairman introduced the subject or providing some means for projecting the bicycles from the sun whilst, standing in . the bicycle shed. Various suggestions were put forward, .and the matter was finally refered to a sub-committee, comprising the chairman; Messrs Busby, Power, Purdie, and the secretary, with power to act. 7 , • FOOTPATH, r It was decided that as Hie manual school budding was nearing completion the B'. wugh Council be approached and requested to form and metal a 'footpath from the intersection of Milder Avenue and Kennedy Street to ths manual srlool building. CONGRATULATE INS. On the motion of Mr Busby, seconded oy Mr Thorp, it was decided to write to Mr J. E. Bigelow, first«ass stunt, congratulating him on obtaining his B.A, degree. CORRESPONDENCE COURSE ; Discussing the reopening of schools, the headmaster asked for an expression of opinion as to the advisability of instituting some system of a correspondcnce course tor the senior pupiis 'during the epidemic. u After a discussion it was decided to : leave the matter in the hands of the headmaster and Mr Preston to make the best arrangements possible. It was agreed to defray the cost of postage and stationery in connection with the ■ undertaking. TESTIMONIALS. Eulogistic references were made to the splendid services rendered by Miss W. E. Sutton and Mr T. H. Wilks during the time they were attached to the staff of the secondary department, if nd it was resolved to write to them embodying the resolutions and to forward a testimonial to each. ' HOUSEHOLDERS’. MEETING. The secretary’s action in arranging for the Soldiers’ Club in which to hold the annual, householders’ meetnig was (indorsed. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Power and Thorp were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. CONDOLENCE. A resolution expressing condolence with the widow and family of the late Mr H. J. Hayward was carried, in silence. The chairman referred to the valuable services rendered by the deceased during the time he was a member of the committee.
