Is it possible to dream to order —to decide before sleep what to dream about 1 Dr, Edwin E' Slosson, of‘ Washington, explains how it is possible to banish nigh'tmarej substituting bright, happy dreams, 'because of new researches carried out in connection with hormones. ’This name is given to glandular secretions that pass into the blood and stimulate the organs to action (s.iyS the ‘‘Daily Express”). ’ Hormones have a great effect on dreams. One glandular oxpfert, Dr. Finley, gave a patient a grain a day of aii extract from a mucous swab* to stiengtiien her blood pressure. After ten days her dreams became bright and cheerful. , She travelled in hexdreams aS' she had always' longed to do in reality. Wherever she went in dreams the surroundings were full of colour. She never, while under this treatment, had colourless ox- terrifying dreams. The doctor, however, altered the treatment to adrenalin, another glandular - secretion.. Immediately the 'woman’s dreams were distorted and tilled with quarrels. Insulin, if administered excessively, at once causes feelings of fear to possess the patient, who .trembles and ultimately collapses ,with dread. Sti angely enough', the patient can recover his courage almost as quickly by eating sweets ox- sugar. “Possibly anxiety and terror dreams in general may be caused by some disturbance in the balance of the hormones, or similar organic derangement, rather, than by anything unpleasant in one’s past experience or present predicament, ’ states Dr. Slosson.
