Local weather conditions on Saturday were rather boisterous, a stiff north-westerly wind blowing, which increased to a gale at times. Shortly after 8 p.m. heavy rain commenced to fall, and it continued until early yesr terday morning, when’ the weather cleared, but the sky was overcast. This morning a thunderstorm passed over the town, followed by a heavy shower of rain.
The preliminary work for the erection of the new post office is being carried out by the Public Works officials to-day by pegging off the site where the building is to be erected. It is expected that the contractor will commence operations in about a fortnight’s time.
A meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce will be held to-morrow evening in .the Coronation Chambers.
The new manual school in Miller Avenue. Paeroa, is now neaiing completion. The electricians completed their portion of the contract on Saturday.. and tlic carpenters expect to be finished towards the end of this week. An official opening of the institution cannot be undertaken until the public schools re-open.
A persistent rumour was in circulation on Saturday that a case of infantile paralysis had occurred in Corbett Street, Paeroa. From inquiries made this morning we are pleased to be able to state that the report is unfounded.
Work, on the Turua-Netherton road within the Turua southern area that was authorised by the Hauraki Plains County Council at its last meeting, is being pushed ahead. On Friday evening the whole of the 60-odd chains from the (Orchard East Road corner to the Te Kauri drain had been scarified, about 20 chains of tramline laid, and about five chains of road had received its first course of metal.
Mr Coulter, Mayor of Te Aroha, accuses Mr Macmillan, M.P. for Tauranga, of neglect of the district for the past two years, and challenges him to take the platform and give the electors an opportunity to judge on the matter. So far there has been no response from Mr Macmillan.
