CONTROL OF DAIRY PRODUCE.

DRASTIC ACTION TO BE TAKEN.

The burning question of the hour in dairy circles its the prospect of improvements in marketing methods of the industry being effected by. the proposals of the Dairy Produce Export Control Board, to exercise control over all produce, but still use the existing channels of distribution on the .British Market. At the regular meeting of the executive of the Wellington provincial branch of the Daily Farmers’ Union, held in Palmerston North last week, a brisk discussion occured, and ais an outcome there was unanimously carried the following resolution giving hearty support to the Board’s proposal: “That this Executive of the Dairy Farmers’ Union approves of the legislation passed.last year for the purpose of controlling dairy produce, and supports the Board in any action it may like to take to bring this legislar tion into operation. At the same time the Executive urges that satisfactory representation on the personnel of the Board is absolutely necessary, and, is of the opinion that the ward system should be immediately introduced.” In raising the question, Mr J. I Fox said that certain newspaper propaganda had been circulated endeavouring to create feeling, and that the chairman and a few members of the board were endeavouring to bring about the compulsory clauses of the Act. This matter was so important that the opinion of the dairy farmers as a whole should be expressed. and to test the feeling of the union lie desired to know what its policy was, and accordingly, moved the rcs’oluitoii. which was ultimately caiiied. The chairman, Mr P. J. Small, stated strongly that his personal view was that the dairy farmers’ union should give the board every backing that it could. The board deserved the full supper! of producers, because only I>J it having full support would it be able to apply its strength. He had resolved during the next two months to put forward every effort to ensure success for the board’s policy. The fact of the slump having taken place showed that it was necessary bo control supplies The position was seiiand ruin faced many small farmers. He Wanted it thoroughly understood that he had determined the time was ripe for drastic action, which he was prepared to further by all the efforts in his power. “The time is fast joining when compulsion must take place,” he said, “aaid I believe it is the first step in bringing about true co-operation into the country, and will givc us a say in what is going to happen to our produce, He was having circulars printed to put the position before farmers. After a full discussion,■ in which tlie view was generally expressed that the time was ripe for strong action on the part of the board, the motion, assuring the board of the whole support of the union was unanimously carried.
