HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY
ENtHNEEIfS REPORT. The county engineer, Mr F. Basham, reported to the Hauraki Plains County Council meeting yesterday as follows
"Tractor and Grader. —Tills plant has been working on the Ppkeno road, and the .work will be completed today, when the plant will proceed to the TJiranda road on expenditure of Public VZorks grant of £SGO. It appears that there is sufficient work in the county to warrant the purchase of another tractor. It is impossible for one machine to cope with all the work in the limited fine weather season experienced in this locality. The cost would be £350.” ’ In reply to Cr. Mayn the engineer said that tractor and grader maintenance of roads was the most economical There was ample work available, but insufficient funds for as much maintenance as was necessary. Hs had mentioned the matter so that it con'd be considered in time for next season’s work. g “Pi’kahu Road.—The contractors are making satisfactory progress witn this road.
"Ngataipua Road- The resident engine o’-'of the Public Workis Department has been communicated with re sanesilation of balance of vote (£l7 8s 3d) and he is endeavouring to get the amount reinstated, "Kainere-Ohinewai Rg.ad—■&., contract for metalling this road has been let at 7s per cubic yard. LOAIN WORKS. ' ‘‘Kehely’s Contract.—The committee set up to deal with the question of the dust in the crushed metal decided- that it was the best policy to let the dust run in with the srn.ali chips and t,ake delivery of the whole output of the crusher. This has not proved satisfactory, and I have been compelled to modify this arrangement by having all the duist taken out of the chips and delivered separately, it may be possible to dispose of this dust for concerte or other purposes. “Turua Town District. —Contractors have practically completed the work from Willow Drain to the junction with the bitumen portion, of the road at post office. Owing to the dust in the chips a portion of the work did not appear too satisfactory, and I had the first coat of chips swept off after rolling and before applying the last coat of bitumen. Considerable progress has been made on the first coat wo’-k on the Orongo road. “Pekapeka Road.—The committee set up to deal with tenders for this road did not accept any price, as the only tenderer was not prepared to make sufficient reduction in his tender to bring it within the estimated cost of the work.”
