Speaking to a club member on the tennis courts on Saturday afternoon Dr. Gray, who is a noted amateui tennis player, said that in his opinion the Paeroa Tennis Club’s courts were among the finetst grass courts it had been his pleasure to play on.
Early yesterday morning a heavy thunder storm passed over Paeroa, followed by torrential rain for about half ai hour. The weather continued boisterous throughout the forenoon, but cleared considerably in the afternoon. This morning dawned fine, with a stiff north-easterly wind blowing. The prospects for a fine day for the holiday to-morrow are at present rather doubtful.
A rather unusual and very painful accident happened to Mr E. A. Porritt, of Thames Road, Paeroa, on Saturday afternvon. It appears that he was mowing a lawn, when a small piece of stick became caught in the machine and was whirled upwards with considerable force, striking Mr Porritt in the right eye and cutting the eyeball. Medical attention was summoned. anid although it its expected that the sight-will not be permanently injured, the sufferer is at present confined to a darkened room.
What kind of tobacco do you prefer —mild, medium, or full ? If you have been lang a worshipper at the shrine of My Lady Nicotine you Lave doubtless sampled all sorts of brands at one time or another, and have your preferences. But have you ever tried toasted tobacco ? It is quite a new idea. The leaf is carefully toasted, and this process develops the flavour and aroma in quite a surprising way. It’s like eating salt with nuts or mustard with beef or cheese. You can test this for yourself, because the New Zealand tobaccos, now so much in evidence, are all toasted. Hence their delightful fragrance and flavour. And, unlike most imported brands, they contain such a small percentage of nicotine that they may be smoked pipe after pipe ‘‘till the cows come home” without unpleasant or harmful consequences. They won’t bite tlie tongue, and appeal to all tastes. ‘‘Riverhead Gold” is aromatic, "Toasted Navy Cut” (Bulldog) a pleasing medium, and “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bull’s Head) a fine, full-flavoured tobacco*
Next Saturday’s cricket matches on the Plains will be : Ngatea v. Pipiroa, at Pipiroa ; Kaihere v. Waitakaruru, at Kaihere.
On account of the restrictions placed by the Health Department on the congregation of children the annua, picnic of .the Hauraki Plains Athletic and Sports Association which was to have been held at Turua on Saturday last was postponed indefinitely.
A truck containing twelve six and a-half-months-old pigs, which lia<been 1 ought from Mr A. Alexander, of Hikutaia, by' Mr F. Cowern for Borthwick and Sons, Waitara, attracted considerable interest at the Paeroa station yesterday. The outstanding feature about the pigs, apart from the fact that they were out of 0113 litter, the mother being a purebred Berkshire, was the uniform quality’ and size. People who saw the litter yesterday freely commented on the even growth and uniformity of the pigs, which is rarely found in so large a litter. The gross live weight of the twelve pigs was given as over one ton the average killing weight being about 1401 b.
