THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. MONDAY, JANUARY 26, 1925. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Addressing the Minister for Lands in Patetonga on Saturday on the advantages enjoyed by the older portions of the Plains, a speaker caused many “Hear, hear’s” by stating that the latest song in that township was ’Ulow are you going to keep tlie women on the farm now that they have been in gay Ngatea ?”

Thu spell of fifteen days without rain was broken yesterday, when several light showers of brief duration were recorded. Shortly after 5 o’clock this morning heavy rain fell for about an hour, and will do much towards freshening up the pastures, and gardens. A good heavy downpour would be particularly welcome ,it present.

The work of sanding and draining Pukaliu Road, Awaiti, is proceeding steadily, ,and the grant of £lOOO made by the Government a few months ago is beir-.g expended to. the best possible advantage. In days gone by it seemed more than doubtful whether New Zealand would ever produce tobacco really worth smoking. But now, owing to imrpoved methods of culture anti manufacture, the Dominion is growing tobacco of really fine quality, and farmers in districts where -it flourishes are finding it more and more worth their while to cultivate it as a. sideline. That there is money in it for the grower is demonstrated by the fact that the average yield of a tobacco crop per acre is worth £5O, sometimeis more. As for the manufacturers. they are to be heartily congratulated on successfully establishing an industry which not only already finds employment for many workers, but promises to become of immense assistance to agriculturists and a source of our national, wealth. Tne leading brands of these tobaccos are: Riverhead Gold, a pure aromatic of very agreeable flavour; Navy Cut (Bulldog), a medium-flavoured tobacco, very popular with smokers ; and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), a fine, fullflavoured variety that has innumerable friends.*
