WORKS IN THE BOROUGH.

MONTHLY STATEMENTS. The following records of the Paeroa Borough Council’s different departments were submitted to the council meeting last night:— FOREMAN’S REPORT. “Maintenance and general work in connection with street improvements has been carried out curing the month. The noxious weeds have been cleared on most of the wad boundaries of the municipal reserves and the grass mown on the worst of the overgrown footpaths. The metal on Willoughby and Russell streets is all spread, and is now being i oiled and sprayed with -bitumen. “A start on the metalling of King Street will be made on Tuesday next, and while the good weather laists the work onthe other roads will be proceeded with. The contractor has almost finished his work in thezHill Street cutting.” WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. ‘‘Every effort is being made to push on with street improvement work while the weather is favourable. In Russell and Willoughby streets the formation has been regraded, thoroughly rolled, metalled, and by the time of this meeting the penetration coat of bitumen should be completed. The roller and bitumen sprayer are working excellently, and the wisdom of purchasing adequate plant is being strongly demonstrated. “The night work in addition to constant day work was proving too much for the horses, so, with the approval of the chairman of the finance committee and the chairman of the sanitary committee, it was decided to purchase another horse. This horse also is doing the work of moving the heavy bitumen sprayer, etc., which enable:, the driver to car y on his formation work with the other two houses. The animal is staunch and reliable, and with all harness and cart cost the council £l6 10s, which was a very good purchase indeed. "In order to push on with Willoughby Street work it was necessary to form the continuation oi Russell Street through to Wood Street because the roller could not be brough. down the loose metal on the hill. This work was done entirely by our own two houses and driver, and the time taken was three days. It constitutes a great improvement at very little cost, and proves the wisdom of owning our own plant. “King Street has been fie ally formed ami thoroughly rolled ny our own staff, and a contract hsa been let for carting the metal, which is now being spread and is nearing completion. The rolling and bituminising of this street will be proceeded with as soon as Russell and Willoughby streets are done. “Formation work in Dulcie Street is now about completed—also by the borough staff —and arrangements made for carting the metal. This road, will be proceeded with after King Street. “Formation is nearing completion on Coronation Street, and, weathei permitting, it is intended to push straight on with the wiling and metalling when Dulcie Street is finished. “The contract for the removal ot spoil from the top of Hill Street is completed and the railway engineers have measured up the work,. Arrangements have been made with the contractor to complete the formation of this road by filling, cutting, and grading with a large grade*’ from the metal in Hill Street to the metal in Kennedy Street. This will complete the formation and make a good job. The price agreed upon for this work wavs £25. There is some criticism of the grade of this work; but we would point out that in engineering practice we are advised that the grade is not a heavy one, and the expense •of a- deeper one would be considerable and unwarranted.

“The- other urgent works while the good weather lasts are tlie tai ring and sanding of the balance of tne main street footpaths, domain footpaths, and the test strip of bitumen in Puke Road. It is therefore imperative to concentrate on this work during the coming month.

“A communication has been forwarded to the District Engineer for Railways urging the department to push on with the work in Taylor’s Avenue and Moore Street, otherwise very great-inconvenience is going to be experienced when the w-et weathei’ sets tn: ’ '

‘‘The portion of, formation work in King Street which has been done by the staff will be debited to the contractor and the balance of his contract amount paid
