MOTOR VEHICLES BILL.

DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL.

SUGGESTIONS FROM COMMITTED.

A conference of local bodies to discuss the Motor Vehicles regulations under the 1924 Act was held in Hamilton on Tuesday last, when Cr. A. R. Robinson, chairman of the Ohinemuri County Council, and Cr. P. E. Brenan.. Paeroa Borough Council, attended as delegates.

At Thursday night’s meeting of tne Borough Council a letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs enclosing a copy of the Motor Vehicles Bill, which came into force on January 1, 1925, and asking for the council’s comments thereon.

The following report was brought down by a special sub-committee appointed to go into the matter : — “That the Ministers and officials are making a sincere attempt to frame regulations applicable to a difficult subject.

“That the scale of license fees should be on a tonnage basis (to include load and weight of vehicle). “That the classification of roads be first, second, third, and fourth class to avoid misnderstanuing, seeing, that a class D vehicle would not ne allowed on a class D road. “That the apportionment of fees should be on a mileage basis, according to the mileage of roads in each class. That is to say, a local body not providing first-class roads shall not participate ni class F license fees, and so on down the scale. "That the license feeis to be charged should be at the same rate per ton for all classes, including the load and weight of vehicle. “That heavy traffic fees be collected by the Government through the post office and apportioned by the Main Highways Board. “That tlie remainder of the proposed regulations, which are experimental, should be given a fair trial by those interested. "In reference to the draft regulations for the licensing of drivers, this committee recommends to the Council to approve of the Minister’s proposals, and suggests that the council appoint an examiner to deal with applications as they come in.”

After a brief discussion the report was adopted.

The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) said that the next step was the appointment of an examiner, and he intimated that Cr. Brenan had generously offered to undertake the duties gratuitously. Cr. Brenan’s offer to act as honorary examiner was accepted, and he was warmly thanked for his public splritedness. Tn reply to Cr. Flatt, Cr. Brenan said that obviously a person desiring to obtain a license would be required to provide the motor vehicle.
