HAURAKI PLAINS SHOW.
FIXED FOR MARCH 7. MORE SPECTACULAR EVENTS. At the conclusion of last year’s Hauraki Plains A. and P. Association Show it was thought by many members that it would be well to cut out the. function for a year or two until the district had recovered from , the effects of the disastrous winters and until more enthusiasm was shown. However, when at the annual meeting in December last it was decided to hold a show,, and that it be at Kerepeehi, the people of that district gladly. undertook the rseponsibility, and by their enthusiasm are now leaving no stone unturned to make it a success and prove that the confidence of members had not been misplaced. The Kerepeehi Sports Club has merged into the association, bringing many enthusiastic members and some very welcome funds. Many new members have been enrolled in that district, and the numerous offers of assistance from the other parts of the county demonstrate that the efforts being made arc appreciated. The date of the show has been definitely fixd for Saturday, March 7. It is a matter for regret that the financial state of the association necessitates drastic curtailment of this season’s activities by the elimination of the cattle classes. However, it is hoped that by careful management and the substitution of spectacular events the function will oc made a financial success as well as an attractive outing. In the horse classes, particularly, the provision of more of the popular events, and in some cases the reduction of the entrance fees, should do much to induce competition.
In the horticultural and industrial sections an improvement has been made during the revision >f the sched‘ule by removing anomalies and providing more classes.
The possibility of providing facilities for crossing the river and the Awaiti canal to enable vehicles from Kailiere. and beyond to utilise the road on the Kerepeehi block has been considered, and if this is not possible, efforts will be made to secure a launch to run to and from Ngarua Landing.
Efforts are .also being made to secure a band to provide music on the showground. in view of the proportion of unfinanc ial members, the membership tickets will not be sent out this year as has been done in the past. Possibly only those who were financial last season will receive tickets before this season’s subscription is paid.
In the days of Auld Lang Syne a N.Z. grown tobacco made its appearance on the market but failed to get a hold on the smoking public. The leaf was all right, but there was something deficient in the c uring, and the industry languished and fizzled out. A much more recent attempt to solve the problem resulted in the production of the National Tobacco Co.’s brands, now firmly established in the favour of the smokers. The secret of this success is said to be due to the new toasting process, whch has resulted in a most remarkable improvement in the smoking quality. The difference between the toasted and the nontoasted product is as wide as a cooked potato differs in taste from a, raw potato. Any smoker can easily convince himself by trying just a few pipes of any of the following brands: Riverhead Gold, very mild ; Toasted Navy Cut (Bulldog), of medium strength ; and Cut Plug No. 10, for those who prefer a full body.*
