KARANGAHAKE.
FAREWELL SOCIAL. A very pleasant farewell social evening was spent at Karangahake on Saturday last, the function being in honour of Miss Nellie Scott, late infant mistress at tlie Karangahake public school. The gathering was the largest seen in the local hall for some time. At the entry of Miss Scott and party all present rose and sang “For she’s a jolly good fellow” in a very hearty manner. After the younger people had enjoyed several dances Mr J. B. Morris, chairman Of the local schorl committee, addressed ' the gathering. He spoke feelingly and earnestly of Miss Scott’s splendid work at and out of the school during her service of four years, and remarked that in accepting her new position in the Hawke’s Bay district she was bettering herself financially, and in other ways. At ilie conclusion of Mr Morris’ (speech Miss Mollie Bramble, a former pupil of Miss Scott’s, read in clear tones an eulogistic address, which she then presented to her loved teacher. Master Norman Rackham and Miss Gwen Griffin, also tiny pupils, presented their friend and teacher with farewell gifts—a leather suit-case and a handsome brush and comb. During tlie presentation pupils ind former pupils lined the hall. Miss Scott, who has spent most of her life at her home, “The Ranch,” at Turner's Hill, in her reply said that she was pleased at having the opportunity of saying au revoir to all her friends She was distressed at the thought of breaking up her home and leaving the district. Any successes she had achieved she' felt sure were largely due to the help of the co-op-erativi and progressive school committee. She paid a tribute to all the teachers with whom she had worked since coming to Karangahake. They had always given her every assistance, while their relations were always Giose of a very happy family. A few words concerning home and borne life were delivered to the children. The function came to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” ’ Throughout the evening vocal items were rendered by Misses D. Griffin and M. Pike, and Messis Fisher, Green, R. Griffin, and A. Pike. Mr F. Clarke (piano) was ably supplemented by Mr A. Pike (violin) and Len Pike (cornet). NGATEA. SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
