MOTOR VEHICLES.

RESPONSIBILITY OF OWNERS. THE NEW ACT. The regulations dealing wltn tne registration and licensing of motor vehicles, under the Motor Vehicles Act, came into force on January 1. 1925. A perusal of the document , reveals cite fact that all motor vehicles have to be registered and licensed annually, the place of registration being the Post andLTelegraph Office. Although the Act came into force on New Year’s Day, it is not imperative that motor vehicles then in use. shall be register ed on that day, as the Act states, inter alia: “In the case of a motor vehicle which is in use in New Zealand at the commencement of the Act, application for registration shall be made before February 1, 1925, and pending its registration under this Act, it tshall be lawful to use such motor vehicle until February 1, provided it has the identification marks and numbers appropriate to its registration affixed, under the Motor Regulations Act of 1908.”

The fee for registration of a motor vehicle is £l, and that of a motor cycle 10s.

Apart from the registration of such vehicles the owner is compelled to taae out an annual license to use such vehicle, but the vehicle must.be registered before a license can be iissued. Every license shall be for a period terminating on March 31 next, save that license issued before March 31, 1925, shall on payment oii the approximate fee —motor cycles xOs, private motor-ear £l, public motor-car £2, motor coach or > motor omnibus £5, trade motors (a) one-ton trucks fitted witii pneumatic tyres on all wheels, £2 ; motor lorry with solid tyres £5, motor lorry with pndumatic tyrejs on all wheels £3, every other trailer £l, every other motor vehicle £2 —continue in force until March 31 of the following year. Local authorities have been given power to issue motor drivers’ licenses, which come into effect on April 1.

Motor vehicle owners should acquaint themselves with the requirements of the regulations as for an offence under the Act the owner is liable to a heavy penalty.
