HOLIDAY TRADE.
BIG INCREASE IN PAEROA. Shopkeepers in Paeroa are unanimous in stating that the Christmas and New Year trade locally has shown a decided increase on previous years. Noe only have the actual cash takings p, exceeded those of corresponding" periods of previous years, but the s number of visitors to the retail estao-' lishments was greatly in excess of last year. Purchasers generally showed a preference for gifts of good value, and as the prices of many lines of articles were much lower than last Christmas ;; such a large increase in the turnover of the retailers must be considered very satisfactory and augu’-s well for the future. •- Christmas Eve buying was a record for the town, and again on New Year's Eve, despite the threatening weather, the crowd of eager purchasers in and out of the tsliops in the main street was- exceptional. Several oi the firms report that trade throughout the month of December was very satisfac- . . tory, and considerably in excess of December, t 923. Judging by the re- ■ * . marks made by some of the business-, V. men the recognition of Paeroa as a shopping centre is gradually but ly being made, and provided the re- x tailers set themselves out to main- _ G tain the high standard and variety or goods, combined with prompt and courteous service, which prevailed during the festive season just past, they should have no cause to complain ■ of lack of support during the ensuing _ * year. •
