The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) has received a communication from the liquidator of the Ohinemuri Light and Power Co., Auckland, acKnowledging the decision of the ratepayers not to authorise the Borough Council ’o purchase the local gasworks and advising that the request of the Mayor not to close down the gasworks until the last possible moment had been duly considered by the company. It had been decided to definitely cease supplying gas on the date advertised, noon on February 10.

To meet the wishes of the public the “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review’’ is issued a day earlier this week. The picturesque centre pages are devoted to effective scenes from the J. C. Williamson Comic Opera Company’s reductions, a frontispiece of Gladys Moncrieff attracting additional attention. The forthcoming Ellerslie races are, of course, of potent interest, so the photographs of Auckland Cup candidates will command more than a passing glance. Two pages of the contestants form a very striking portion of the issue.

A word of praise is clue to the efficiency and courteousness of the local post office officials, who this Christmas arc handling a greater volume of bu.-iness than in past year.:. The inward and outward parcel and package mails have been very heavy, and when it is considered that the premises and facilities are totally inadequate a large measure of praise should be accorded the staff. The activity in the public room yesterday morning was exceptional. The fact that war, old-age, and other pensions were being paid out added considerably to the work and congestion, It speaks volumes for the capabilities of the counter clerks, Messrs P. Jaspers and J. Keenan, that in the short space of twelve minutes twenty-seven people were attended to and twenty-three parcels accepted over the counter. The advent of Paeroa’s new post office will not only be appreciated by the local townspeople and visitors, but it is safe to assume that the local postal staff will welcome more commodious and up-to-date premises in which to work.
