HORAHIA DRAINAGE.
SPECIAL BOARD MEETING. A special meeting of the Horahis Drainage Board was held at the residence of Mr F. A. Kneebone, on Friday last, Mr W. McDuff presiding ovei Messrs F. A. Kneebone, R, L. Davies J. M. Thompson, J. McKerc.har, J. •) Milier, W, E. Hale, and W. E. G. Willy secretary. ‘ A TYPEWRITER. Several letters were received with reference to a typewriter. The price of a second-hand machine appeareto be about £2O. The letters were file: for future reference. BANK OVERDRAFT. The chairman reported having interviewed the manager of the Bank New Zealand with regard to an overdraft. He had been informed .that this could not be granted until the requisite permission had been received from the Minister of Internal Affairs. The clerk had therefore applied to the Minister. The position was serious, as it was necessary tc commence work in a few months, and it was not possible to strike a rate for some time. It was decided to defer consideration unti. a reply had been received from the Internal Affairs Department. After the luncheon adjournment the clerk reported that a reply had been received stating that the matter was receiving consideration. The amount of overdraft limit desired was asked for. It was decided, on the motion of Mr W E. Hale, that application bs made for permission to draw up to the full amount allowed under the Local Bodies Finance Act. TOUR OF INSPECTION. Owing to the fact that several members were suffering from influenza the proposed tour of Lie district had to be deferred. It will be commenced on Friday next. FINANCE. Several important financial matters were discussed in committee. Ou standing orders being resumed the recommendation that Mr W. E. G. Willy be appointed to classify the land in the board’s area was approved, He was instructed to ascertain the legal position and .the formalities to be complied with, and to commence work as quickly as possible, DIVISION OF AREA. The chairman asked for an expression ol opinion in regard to dividing the area into wards. He did not think it would be feasible .to cut the area into seven wards, and was of the opinion that three or four would be sufficient. Mr Miller thought i.t would be advisable to cut the area into wards with a community of interest It vs as pointed, out that it would. b€ difficult to define areas including all of the drains used by those areas alone. It was suggested that, the area be divided into three wards. The southern area would comprise all the land from the board’s southern boundary tc a line running behind the sections fronting the southern side of Orchard East Road, the northern area would be all that land from the Gulf to a line running behind the sections on the northern side of Piako Road, and the central ward would comprise *ll the remainder of the area. With this subdivision theYe would be two representatives each for the northern and Southern .wards and three for the central ward. Mr Kneebone pointed out that thei": was no urgent, necessity for dividing the area, and that more drains mighl be made before that necessity arose. The matter was deferred. CLEANING OF DRAIN. Mr R. L. Davies pointed out th a! when the Horahia-Opou drainage scheme was under discussion the Lands Drainage Engineer had promised that the continuation of the Willow drain would be cleaned if fund.permitted. This had not yet beer done, and the board should move ir the matter. On the motion of Mr Thompson, seconded by Mr Davies, the secretary was instructed to communicate with the Drainage Department.
