POLICE COURT.

MONDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1924. ) (Before Mr. J. H. Saimou, S.M.) RIDING BICYCLE ON FOOTPATH. A young lady, a first offender, was charged with riding a bicycle on the footpath in Normanby Road, Paeroa, on November 22. There was no appearance of the defendant. Constable McClinchy gave evidence of the incident, and a conviction was entered and a fine of ss, with cost's 7s, was imposed. ASSAULT CHARGE. Alfred Lipsey was charged with behaving in a violent and offensive manner to the annoyance of others on the Paeroa railway station on November 15 last. A second charge of assaulting Harold A. Moore by strike ing h.'m with a clenched fist on the mouth and breaking three false teeth was also preferred against Lipsey, the alleged offences taking place at the same time. ’ Constable McClinchy stated that he was on duty at the Paeroa railway station .when the race train from Thames arrived. Defendant had had drink, and did not intend to be offensive. Accused was a decent young man, and. had since regretted his action. Mr E. W. Porritt appeared for the detoiwant and stated that the act had' been a foolish one. The teeth had been paid for and an apology tendered. His Worship said that offences of that nature must be considered seriously. The offence had been a verv gross one, and had it been committed by an adult imprisonment would have been ordered without any hesitation. On the charge of behaving in an offensive manner Lipsey was convicted and fined £5, in default one month’s imprisonment- iOn the charge of assault defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 13s. MAINTENANCE OF CHILDREN. . The police applied for au order to be made to, provide for maintenance for two children yvho are at present in the Hamilton Receiving An order by consent was made against the grandfather of the children at 2s 6d a week for each child, payment to commence from December 1.
