DISTRICT NEWS.

TURUA. VALEDICTORY. A farewell banquet was arranged by the Hauraki Plains Athletic and Sports Club and held in the Turua Buildings, Turua, on Monday evening to bid farewell to one of its members, Mr F. who, after being in the employ of Messrs Bagnall Bros for four years, has decided to seek a change. About 40 persons were present, and a very enjoyable evening was spent with toasts, songs, and stories. During the evening Mr Goodsell was presented by the members of the club with a case of Loewe pipes. PATETONGA. TENNIS CLUB’S CONCERT. A. very enjoyable conceit was organised on behalf of the Patetonga Tennis Club by Mrs Thompson and held m the Public Hall on Saturday evening last. A very heavy shower of rain commenced about 6 p.m. and continued for about two hours, and it was expected that the attendance would be materially affected, as in a district where there are clay roads the weather is often a deciding factor. However, when the entertainment. commenced all the seats in the hall were occupied. A long programme of vocal items submitted was thoroughly enjoyed. Songs were contributed by Mr H. Booth, of Kerepeehi, Miss B. Wallace, Mr D. Tuhoe, Mr D. Pike, Mr J. Cald.weH, and Miss O’Connor. A number of commie songs were contributed by Mr W. McIlvridc, or Thames, Mr McNaughton gave several, recitations, and Mr W. White, of Thames, contributed several whistling solos. NETHERTON. TENNIS. A commendable proposal to promote the social life of the district has been adopted by the Netherton Tennis Club. With the idea of fostering gatherings of people at its courts, where, amid pleasant surrounings, they can meet old friends and enlarge the scope of their friendships, the chib has decided to admit nonplaying members at a small subscription. The courts are situated on the recreation ground, provided by the people of the district, and they thereby have some right to be present, but are naturally reluctant to attend, thinking that their presence will not be welcomed by the members of the Tennis Club. The payment of the small annual subscription decided upon will not only help the club and provide afternoon tea on regular days, but should remove any doubt that non-playing members would not be welcomed.
