ROAD CONSTRUCTION.
EXPENDITURE IN AMERICA. NEARLY £160,000,000 A YEAR. Nearly £160,000,000 a year is being spent by the United States on road construction. Mr Calder, chairman of tile Victorian Country Roads Board, waxed eloquent at a conference of the Municipal Association in Melbourne recently when dealing with his observations ofi road making in America and England. Of the total expenditure 14 per cent, was derived from FedeTal aid, 14 per cent, from tourist and disrtict townships, .19 per cent, from motor vehicle revenue, 12 per cent, from taxes and appropriation, and 7 per cent, from State roads boards. Thus there were several sources contributing to this big national undertaking. There were at present 15,000,000 motor-cars in U.S.A. Next year there was expected to be increasing in popularity all over the world. In California alone there were 1,000,000 cars, or one to every three and a half persons. In Victoria motor users were increasing at the rate of 30 per annum.
