THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1924. BACON EXPORT TRADE.

Any proposal to assist the dairy farmers should receive earnest con•sideration. Some time ago the Meat Producers’ Board urged that a profitable trade could be developed in the export of best Quality bacon. The Prime Minister, as the result of investigations during his last- trip Home, is of the same opinion. Now that a change in British ivlitics has taken place the time is opportune to make a forward move in the matter. The Danish output is reported to have suffered a decline, and a welcome increase in price has come to British producers. Authorities state that it the United Kingdom doubled its pig numbers it would only go a short way to. meet the demand, and there would still be ample room for the comparatively small export from New Zealand. Pig raising in Britain has recently been put upon a broader and sounder basis : the class of animal and methods of management have improved. The demand for bacon is reported to have considerably increased, and the supply cannot cope with the demand. The production in this country is quite sufficient for Dominion needs. The bacon industry is a difficult one to manage—the experi-ence-of more than one company ’n New Zealand has proved that, and shareholders have lost money. A wide outlook must ne taken of the position. Dominion farmers should be able to raise pigs as cheaply as other persons in any country. The best breeds can be found out by experience and research. Farmers’ unions, and other such 'ike bodies, would do well to turn their attention to an industry that promises to assist dairy farmers and give then an increased output from their farms. There is a good market awaiting in Britain, and it appears to be a matter for immediate organisation.
