The Te Aroha Bowling Club mustered in strong numbers on Saturday at Paeroa to try conclusions with the Paeroa* Bowling Club and if possible to beat the present holders of the Goldfields Stars. After keen competition the Paeroa Club managed to hold its own, winning on the aggregate by 2, while the Stars rink beat their opponents by 8. The result was in doubt right up to the last head. The green was in splendid condition, but a cold wind towards the finish of play caused trouble to many of the players. The visitors were hospitably entertained and a pleasant alternoon was spent. ■ At the conclusion. The official opening of the night play for the season was held on Saturday, when, considering counter attractions and the threatening weather, there was a good attendance of bowlers and friends. Mr D. Brown, president of the club, extended a cordial welcome to the visitors. They were pleased to have the Mayor and chairman of the Domain Board present with them. The club was anxious to popularise night play, especially in the interests of the young men. The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall), in declaring open the season for night play, said he was pleased to be present as representing the Domain Board. He Celt that ais the result of the recent conference they understood each other better. Difficulties were made to be overcome, and to test a person’s calibre. The cl|Ub and the board had overcome their difficulties, and arrangements were now on a most satisfactory footing. Some people were of the opinion that the club members wanted their bowling at the ratepayers’ expense, but the conference showed that was wrong. They must all try to look at things from the' other fellow’s point of view. The board was out to Ipok after the ratepayers interests, and the bowlers were ready and willing to co-operate. It was a case of "Not Understood,” and the Mayor recited a verse of Bracken’s well-known poem which he thought described the situation. The new agreement, he was sure, would give satisfaction to the general ratepayer, the bowling club, and the domain superintendent (hear, hear), and nothing but good would come but of the recent difference. He called on the Mayoress to throw up kitty, which was done amid applause. Several rinks were made up and u couple of hours’ play indulged in. PRESENTATION. Prior to the starting of play in the afternoon bowlers were called into the pavilion and on behalf of the winners of the Goldfields Stars Mr G. H. Taylor asked the, club to accept a framed enlarged photo of the rink. Mr Taylor explained that this was the fiist year that the Stars carried a prize of £1 Is for each member of the rink, and the recipients had decided to spend the money in procuring a photo for the pavilion walL Mr D. Brown, president, said he had much pleasure on behalf of the club in accepting the gift. It showed a fine sporting spirit on the part of the donors that the first money prize to accompany the Stars should be spent in improving the club’s property. The members showed their appreciation of the action of the Stars rink and the photo wasi immediately hung on the wall of the pavilion.
