PUKAHU ROAD.
SETTLERS DESIRE IMPROVEMENT. DEPUTATION TO' COUNCIL. zl deputation comprising Messrs WSimpson, E. Jamieson, E. Townsend, and R. Roberts, representing the settiers of Pukahu Road, waited upon the ►plains County Council at its meeting ~on Tuesday. The deputation was introduced by Cr. Hare, who pointed out that there was a Government grant of £lOOO for the Pukaliu Road, and the council would be asked to have the specifications prepared and forwarded for approval a«s soon as possible. x Mr Roberts read the requests which had been decided upon by a meeting of ratepayers, Mr Jamieson contended, for the settled that it was largely their activities that had caused the free grant to be made. They desired the road to be stumped, drained, farmed, and sanded during the present season, so that it would consolidate. In a few vjears, or perhaps next* seaison, the >oad would be fit to take metal, and then the settlers would probably ask the council to raise a small loan. Mr Townsend urged the granting of the request as the settlers had had to put up with a mud road until the present. 0 Mr Simpson also-urged that a suflicient culvert or bridge be put in to replace a certain culvert on a continuation of the H drain. The whole drainage question, required attention, and he would offer a suggestion that the road should be built well up above flood level. The settlers of the area were quite willing to be included. in a loan for the riding, but could wait indefinitely. , In reply, the county chairman said &hat the engineer would be instructed to prepare the plans and specifications as soon as possible and to look into the matter of drainage. Mr Jamieson mentioned another matter, concerning the sand that had been used on the main road from the Puke bridge to Wilson’s Road. This had been pumped by ‘he Public Works Department at the request of the settlers for uise on the Pukahu and Stop-bank roads, and the carting had damaged the road. Cr. Hare pointed out that the sand could be replaced at a later stage, and that when it was used it was the most handy. The deputation thanked the council z for it-, patient hearing and for its \ action when in Wellington in getting the grant made available. Cr. Hare moved that the engineer be instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the work. "Seconded by Cr. McLoughlin and carried.
