A LONG WAIT.

WHLAREPOA FERRY HAPPENING. A SYREN SUGGESTED. A letter from Mr J. C. Miller, junr., was read at the meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council yesterday. Mr Miller complained that recently he had to whit from 11.20 p.m. on one day until 5.30 a.m. the next day before he could draw the attention of the ferryman to the fact that he wished to cross the river. It was decided by the council to get a report from the ferryman. Cr. Nicholson said that bis son had been called up several times during the previous night and had spent the dav following repairing the road, and so he was very tired and had apparently slept very soundly. A gong was provided, but experience in the past had ptoved that it could not at times be heard across the river. Cr. Hare advocated providing a syren, or other loud-sounding instrument.

Mr C. W. Nicholson, the ferryman, wrote pointing out that owing to the state of the roads on either side of the ferry his gross takings for the month had only amounted to £l5 ss. He asked the council to bring his wages up to 12s a day by paying him £6 6s.

Cr. McLoughlin said that the road on both sides was so bad that there could be practically no traffic. He moved that two months’ rent be remitted

In. seconding Cr. Mayn pointed out that tlie ferryman was. carrying on in face of great difficulties. The complaint just received was the first one concerning the present ferryman. The motion was carried, Cr. Madgwick voting against it.
