TURUA ROADS.

CONTRACT LET. REVISED SPECIFICATIONS. The following communication from the clerk of the Turua Town Board was received by the Hauraki Plains County Council yesterday:— "I have been instructed to inform you that the board on November 6 accepted ,a tender of the N.Z. Roads, Ltd., of Auckland, for laying down that portion of the reading scheme in the Turua Town Boards area consisting of the main road from the Willow drain to the northern boundary tor the inclusive sum ofi £4624 Is. “The Board held a conference with the county engineer (Mr Basham) and Mr Carson, engineer for N.Z. •Roads, Ltd., and Mr Basham submitted ,a revised specification for the work Vhich provided for one course of metal six inches thick for the whole length of the above road, but in all other respects the specification is practically the same as he prepared when tenders were previously called for. “The following figures were what the Beard arrived at in accepting the tender, which should enable the work to be carried out at the amount given, subject, of course, to the approval of the council and the engineer: Voting paper figure for section of Hauraki Road from Willow drain to strip of bitumen road in township, £2.565 ; voting paper figure for same road from post office to northern boundary, £1650 , add proportion ofi subsidy payable on Turua-Orongo Road, £250; add proportion of contingencies allowed in voting paper on this portion of total work, £200; total, £4665. On this figure there would be-a-surplus oi £4O 19s over the amount of the tender. The amount of money available from the council at the present time is £4OOO, but it is presumed that when the work is completed it will oe possible to lift the £250 subsidy, which would then leave a shortage of £374 Is to be paid to the contractor. This amount the contractors are prepared to allow to stand over until the council is able to raise, the loan, or will take debentures for the same. These terms were made a /condition of the acceptance of .the tender. In the .above circumstances the Board desires to respectfully ask your Council for its consent and approval to thp tender being accepted and the work being proceeded with. A further condition of the tender is that the contractor has-to take over all. the metal now landed by the board, and the board is to go on landing supplies on behalf of the contractor, but is in no way bound to supply the remainder.. It. is further understood that the board will do all possible fo give a continuance of present supplies until the required amount is landed." The council had no objection, • and the letting of the contract was approved
