THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1924. BRITISH ELECTIONS.

The result of the Parliamentary election taking place in Great Britain to-day will be awaited with much interest throughout the Empire. The electioneering campaign has been bitter, and it is difficult at a distance from the fight to correctly gauge public opinion. It must be admitted that the last Ministry w<as sympathetic to the Soviet, and the Communists. Russia has been very much in evidence. If the electors in Britain, who know more of the details of the various treaties and agreements made during the last few months, approve of those actions, the Labour Party will be given another chance. Surprises may be expected. All sides are working hard. It must be remembered that the franchise at. Home is not the same as in this Dominion. Male electors must have occupied for six months premises of an annual rental value ofl not less than £lO, and a woman voter must be 30 years of age and trust have occupied premises cf a yearly rental of £5, or she may be the wife of a husband entitled to vote. The University franchise requires a man to be 21 and a woman 30 years, and to have taken a degree. A person may vote in two constituencies, and in some cases absent electors may vote by proxy. These qualifications should make for good representation, and agitators and extremists should have little influence. It is to ne hoped for the good of the Empire and the whole world that a substantial majority is given to one party, and that there will not be any need to hold office by the consent of opponents.
