BOWING TOURNAMENT.

CLOTHIER SHIELD COMPETITION. WON BY PAEROA. “One of the best tournaments I have ever played in,” declared Mr Clothier, president of the Goldfields Bowling Association, at the conclusion of the competition for the Clothier Shield and Goldfields Challenge Stars on the Paeroa Bowling Green on Monday. The competition started on Saturday morning, when Mr D. Brown, president, of the Paeroa Club, welcomed the visiting players from Wai hi, Te Aroha, Thames, Hikutaia, Waikino, Matamata,' and Morrinsville. It was concluded on Monday, when the Paeroa No. 2 team was declared the winner of the Shield for the ensuing year and the players in the rink were handed over the Challenge Stars. The green was in splendid order, and the arrangements as carried out by the (secretary of the Paeroa Club, Mr W. Purdie, were, perfect and were favourably commented upon by the players. There was not the semblance of a hitch anywhere. As president Mr D. Brown attended to the visitors, and at the close of the play lie was warmly congratulated upon the success of the gathering. It is seven years since the competition was inaugurated, and this year the games were as enjoyable and the play as keen as on any previous occasion. In handing over the Shield and Stars Mr D. Brown heartily congratulated the winners, Paeroa No. 2. Mr J. Pinder, the winning skip, in reply, thanked his men for the consistent way they had played. He had been runner-up on four previous occasions. Cheers were given for the teams, and on the call of the president of the Paeroa Club hearty cheers were given the lad’es who had supplied afternoon tea on the two days. Gibb led a toucher in the next head. Dare displaced him. When the skips went to the mat Waihi had 2 up, but Pinder displaced and got shot and Paeroa was then 4 up. Masefield missed with his last bowl and the score then stood 5 to 1 in favour of Paeroa, and from then till the end of the game the result was never, in doubt. At the fourth head Pinder with his first bowl lay shot and he put another one in and on a measure Paeroa was given three for the head, making the score 8 1. Hovell lay shot at the fifth head, but was displaced. Pinder was not up with his two shots, and Waihi scored one on this head. At the sixth head Taylor lay phot and got his second just behind the jack. Masefield missed, and Pinder’s last bowl was a toucher, Paeroa putting 4 more on to their total, which then stood at 12 2. The seventh head was in doubt until Masefield’s last bowl stopped, and finally Paeroa scored another 1. At the eighth head Gibb was a foot from the jack, but it gave him shot although he was replaced, and Pinder managed to get one in, making the score 14 2. The ninth was a very wide head. Gibb got two in, and Taylor increased it to 4, and Pinder was successful in bringing it up to 20. Hovell got two counters in at the next head, but Taylor managed to shift one aad got shot. Then Waihi got a wick which gave then shot. Taylor’s second bowl scored a round of applause and gave his side shot, and Pinder put in another, making the 22 2. Waihi scored on the eleventh head. Dare got phot and Pinder promoted one of McGonagle’t and gave Waihi 2 up, and Masefield got another in, the score then being 22 to 5. The twelfth head was another one for Paeroa. Waihi had 4 up when Pinder played an-excellent shot and scoring a toucher, added 1 to Paeroa’s score. Gibb lay shot on the thirteenth head and was never disturbed, making the score 24 to 5. Waihi had 2 up on the fourteenth head when Pinder sent down his second bowl, which reversed the position. Masefield mipsed, and the head added 2 more to Paeroa. Waihi had 1 up until Pinder sent up his last bowl in the fifteenth head and got the shot, making the total 27 to 5. The sixteenth head added 2 more to Paeroa. The seventeenth head gave 3 to Waihi. The leads played wide, Waihi getting shot, and another one was added to it when the skips went to the mat and Masefield drew third shot, bringing his score up to 8. The eighteenth head was another win for Waihi. Hovell lay 2 up, and McGonagle got another one in, and Masefield put in one, making the total 29 to 12. The ninteenth head added 1 to Paeroa’s total, which thus won the Shield and the Stars by 30 to 12. For the first time since the inception of the competition the winning team, in addition to Stars, receive £1 Is each.
