A peculiar accident occurred at •Ngatea on Monday morning. A dray, heavily laden with milk-cans, was coming down off the Ngatea biidgwhen a young horse attached to the side of the shatter caught, sight of the dredge operating in the river and reared up, forcing the one in the shafts through the fence. Fortunately it was tripped up by the wire, otherwise the vehicle would have been capsized over the bank. After about a fortnight’s cold showery weather an improvement, in conditions took place yesterday and the weather has continued fine and spring-like to-day. A spell of fine weather would be welcomed by the settlers in this district, as the feed, considering the season, is not only backward, but what growth of grass there is contains little of the nutriment that is essential to stock co promote butter-fiat production. Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., ciiculated a At the Wembley Exhibition the N.Z. handsomely printed folder, a copy of which has been forwarded to this office. The folder is attractively illustrated, and describes in detail the manufacture of Anchor butter and also gives a few glimpses of the main phases of the manufacture of cheese and milk powder. The information should be of particular interest to British consumers, and over 250,000 folders have been distributed at Wembley. -
Mr D. Leach, secretary of the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Society, Paeroa, has been advised by the Auckland society that 100 pheasants have been allotted to the local society for liberation. It is understood that on receipt the birds will be liberated in the Komata district, and if sufficient interest can be created among the settlers around Netherton it is proposed to liberate a number of birds in that district. It is understood that one hundred birds is the largest allocation made to any one society by the Auckland body.
At a meeting of ratepayers of the Waikato River Board held at Mercer on Saturday, when the attendance included the receiver appointed by the Supreme Court for the A.M.P. Society, one speaker declared that in 40 years experience with local bodies he had never had anything to do with such a disgraceful state of affairs (says the Franklin ‘“Times”). A resolution was carried by the meeting requesting the Minister of Internal Affairs to hold a public inquiry into the methods of working o£ the board. No balancesheet had been issued for some time. The receiver intimated .that he had issued rate .demands, for the last two years and the current year, and he intended .to press for payment from every person whose name appeared on the roll. Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective. of fiction, smoked strong black shag tobacco and derived inspiration from it when puzzling over some problem of more than ordinary complexity. Shag is too full-flavoured for many rmokers. It contains a lot of nicotine, and excels of nicotine is a bad thing. The habitual use of such tobacco is bound sooner or later to affect. the consumer injuriously. Unfortunately practically all imported tobaccos are heavily charged with nicotine. And in that respect they differ essentially from our New Zfealand grown tobaccos, the comparatively small amount of nicotine which «institutes one of their chief recommendaticns. Also—and this is important—they are all toasted, and toasting brings out the flavour of the leaf in a lime, remarkable way. There are several brands of this popular tobacco : Riverhead Gold, mild; Navy Cut (Bulldog label), medium; and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bull’s Head), full strength. Each of them has its merits.
