A meeting of the committee of the Paeroa Bowling Club is to be held this evening to make arrangements for the carrying out of the Clothier Shield and Goldfields Stars competitions, to be played on the Paeroa rinks on Saturday and Monday next. At Thursday’s meeting of the Domain Board the superintendent submitted a report showing that the following hours were spent on work on the various greens during the period October 1, 1923, to September, 30, 1924 : Bowls, 811% hours; croquet, 300% hours; tennis, 17 hours; general work, 1187% hours. A special train conveying Sir Sam Fay and Sir Vincent Raven, the English Railway Commissioners, and Mr R, W. McVilly, general manager of New Zealand Railways, and a number of engineers and heads of the Railway Department, passed through Paeroa shortly after 1.30 p.m. on Saturday en route to Thames. The party left Thames during the late afternoon for Rotorua, where the week-end was spent. Steady, but light, rain commenced to fall on the Plains on Friday evening. and interferred with the working of the soil that is now being done on most of the farms. Ploughs, discs, and harrows have been much in evidence during the recent fine spell, and several farmers have been topdressing their pastures. A particularly heavy shower fell on Saturday afternoon, and a hailstorm passed over the Plains on Sunday morning. The Russian, Fredrick Jaan, whom it will be remembered was picked up in an unconscious condition near Russel' Street, Paeroa, and conveyed *d the Waihi Hospital some nine weeks ago. was found lying dead on the roadside at Thames early on Thursday morning. At the local police court on October 2 Jaan laid an information against a young Maori for the theft of a pair of boots which had been taken while deceased was an inmate of the Waihi Hospital. At the hearing of the case the justices recommended that Jaan, who was at that time out of work, and obviously in ill-health, should be admitted to the Tararu Home at Thames. |
That strip of the main PaeroaPlains road from the Puke bridge to Wilson’s Road that was remetalled some time ago but not blinded, was oh Friday and Saturday last scarified and rolled, so that there is now a smooth surface on the road. Several bad holes between Ne.therton and the Wharepoa ferry corner have been attended to, but the heavy rain during the week-end will probably cause more work with the roller and scarifier to be deferred. Smokers who are niggardly of their "baccy” are rare. As a rule their pouch is at the service of almost anybody. Of course there are exceptions. Do you remember the story of the smoker who kept two pouches ? One he called "the world,” the other “provide nee.” The first was always empty ; the second always well filled. If asked for a fill he would regret that ne “hadn’t a bit in the world.” If Questioned as to what he was going to do for himself he would say, “oh, I must trust in Providence.’’ Well, there are all kinds of smokers, just as there are all kinds of tobacco. By the way, have you tried our own N.Z. grown tobaccos ? In some respects they are unique. For one thing they are all toasted. Hence their peculiarly delightful flavour; secondly they contain so little nicotine that they may be smoked “till the cows come home” '. ithi’iit proving injurious. Thats’ why the doctor’s approve of them. Try Riverhead Gold, mild; Navy Cut (Bullnog), medium; or Cut Plug No. 10 (Bull’s Head), full*
