PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee was held on Saturday evening, the chairman, Mr E. E. Gillman, presiding over Messrs H. J. Hayward, W. T. Power, C. H. Pascoe, C. T. Mettam, R. E. Thorp, and R. G. Southby. The headmaster, Mr G. H. Taylor, and the secretary, Mr W. L. Lawrence, were also in attendance. SAND FOR PLAYING AREAS. The action of the chairman and secretary in arranging for the supply of fifty cubic yards of sand for the upper and lower playing ar.eas in the boys’ playground was approved. It was decided to send a letter of thanks and appreciation to the resident engineer, Public Works Department, Paeroa, for the generous help given in obtaining the sand. MANUAL SCHOOL. Speaking of the plans for the new manual school, the chairman drew attention to the fact that the specifications provided for cedar weatherboarding on the building. He said that in his opinion it was rather a pity New Zealand timber was not used in construction throughout. Several members spoke on the subject, but it was decided to take no action in the matter. INSPECTORS’ REPORT. The report of Messrs C. W. Garrard, H. McChesney, and F. H. Brown, Education Board inspectors was received. The report covered the period of September 11 and 12, and stated that the standard of work in the school was very good, the tone and discipline pleasing, and the pupils courteous and well-behaved. Mention was made of the attention given to schoolground improvements. The surroundings presented an attractive appearance, and the buildings were in good order and kept clean. SCHOOL COURTS EXHIBIT. The Waikato Winter Show Association 'forwarded a- copy of the conditions in connection with the school districts’ courts exhibit, which is being arranged for June next. After a short discussion it was-re-solved that while agreeing entirely with the scheme, the committee could take no action in the matter owing to the distance from the school to Hamilton, and lacked sufficient funds to carry out the project. TECHNICAL SCHOOL SITE. A lengthy report, together with a legal opinion, was submitted by the sub-committee appointed to go into the matter of renewing the lease of the technical high school site. It was decided to forward the report on to the Board for its consideration. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Power and Mettam, on behalf of the visiting committee, reported that the drain under the wattle trees in the girls’ playground required attention, and that some extra concrete was necessary at the end; of the tennis court to prevent erosion ot the bank. A supply of stone was required to complete the work near the science room. The report was received, and it was decided to give effect to the recommendations as funds 1 permitted. Messrs Southby and Busby were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. SCHOOL LIBRARY. The headmaster reported progress in connection with the school library, and stated that the majority of the books authorised had been received. It was decided to provide a suitable cupboard for each classroom in which to house the books. HOLIDAY for show. It was decided to grant a half-holi-day on November 26 and 27, on the occasion of the Hauraki A. and P. show at the Paeroa Domain. Regret .and disappointment was expressed by the members when the secretary reported that the show executive could not see its way to admit school children free to the show at least on People’s Day. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £lO 5s Id were passed for payment. CONDOLENCES. A resolution recording sympathy with the widow and family of the late Mr J. Couper was carried in silence, the members standing.
