GAIETY THEATRE PICTURES. TO-NIGHT. THE FACE ON THE BAR-ROOM FLOOR. The story has to do with Robert Stevens (Henry B. Walthall), an artist of rare ability, who becomes engaged to the lovely Marion Von Vleck (Ruth Clifford). While vacationing in a picturesque fishing village Stevens meeta the demure Lottie (Alma Bennett), a naive fishermaid. He asks her to pose for him, and shyly she agrees. In the meantime Marion and her brother Dick (Walter Emerson) come to the village, and Dick becomes infatuated with the charming Lottie. He refuses to pi,ay square with her, however, and Lottie, feeling herself disgraced, drowns herself. The crime is attributed lo Stevens, and when Dick remains silent the artist takers the blame. Marion breaks her engagement, and, heartbroken, Stevens abandons his work and takes to drink in a desperate effort to forget. He goes from bad to worse, finally landing in a dive, where t.wo disreputable characters plant a pocketbook on him and he is arrested in the raid that follows. In prison the tremendous revolt takes place. Stevens eaves the life of the Governor and escapes to sea in a skiff, finally being washed ashore to an island where the lighthouse is. He lights the light in the nick of time, saving a crowded passengei ship from wreck on the rocks. FOOTBALL FUNCTION. PAEROA UNION’S “ SMOKER.” The Paeroa Rugby Union’s annual emake concert and presentation of trophies won during the season will be held in the Druids’ Hall to-morrow evening. A cordial welcome is extended to the public.
