HORSE DROWNED.
BACKS INTO OHINEMURI RIVER. An unusual accident happened at the Junction, near Mr E. Shaw’s residence, yesterday which resulted in the loss by drowning of a valuable draught horse, the property of Messrs Quinlivan Bros., cartage contractors, Paeroa. It appears that Mr J. Quinlivan was carting spoil for stop-banking purposes, and had just returned to the pit for a load when the horse in the dray failed to stop ui reaching the pit and backed down the bank into the river. The water in the river at this point is about 18 feet deep, and despite the struggles of the animal in the shafts it could not free itself from the harness, and was drowned before a boat could be procured to render assistance. To-day an effort is being made by members of the Public Works staff with a lifting barge to recover the dray and dead animal. The horse was valued at £6o' by Messrs Quinlivan Bros., and their loss is an unfortunate one.
