The smoke nuisance in the Karangahake railway tunnel has been more than usually annoying of late, a train recently coming to a -halt when half way through and returning to Karangahake. It is suggested that the Railway Department be urged to build a trough in the roof of the tunnel, or, as an alternative measure, to proceed with its electrification, the power for which could be easily and conveniently obtained. Pensions granted through the local registrar, Mr P. H. Wylde, for the quarter ended September 30 were eleven old-age and four widow’s pensions. Fifty-eight renewal of pensions were granted during the same period, and thirteen applications are pending. Mr M. T. E. Hooley, who has lately been engineer to the Thames County Council, has been appointed chief mechanical, and electrical engineer to a large English firm operating in New Zealand -and Australia, and takes up his duties on about the 20th instant. For Coughs and Colds, never falls. Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure.
