BOROUGH OFFICES.
cq r> —i should like space to refer to Ihe proposal of the Borough Council to build offices at a cost of £4OOO, subject to the ratepayers’ authority. Probably expressions of opinion from will help to solve this problem. In the first place, Paeioa, though old in years, is yet only a town in the making. The town of the future rests largely with the City Fathers of to-day, whose wisdom or unwisdom.will be reflected in the years to come. The building policy of the two most important public utilities —railways and post office—has been definitely settled, and ere long a substantial edifice to serve Paeroa for all time as a post office will be'erected in the very centre of the town. This position is indisputably the centre of population, and geographically also. No less than six streets radiate from this point, and six corners converge upon it. In view of these facts I feel that, the efforts of those in authority should be directed towards building up the centre —make it something for ourselves to be proud of and the envy of visitors. This can be accomplished by sinking sectional interests to favour of the town ;is a whole. Personally, I do not see why we in Normanby Road should take what Belmont Road has to say like a " lamb.” We want to give the town a real “ fillip.” so that it can win through.' There appears to be some “bane”-ful influence at work, so we must "marshall ” our forces and knock them “ fiat.” If .they take us for silly asses, we must see-as-to-whether the-meth-ods-they-adopt cannot be obviated by a spot or two, or perhaps a “shand”-y. The suggested building would probably cost the ratepayers £2 a week for cleaning. I would rather see a more comprehensive proposal launched later on, to include town hall and appointments that will pay its own way, and buili in a central position. N. R. ROBSON.
