THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 ,1924. LOCAL AND GENERAL

During the junior football match at Ngatea on Saturday last a Turua player,’ W. Johnson, was knocked out for a few moments. He continued playing, and was all right until Sunday evening, when concussion of the brain became manifest and he -was removed to the Thames Hospital. At the special meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council yesterday Cr. Mayn reported that, together with the chairman, he had been appointed to draw up a reference for the late county engineer. So that it could be incorporated in the testimonial, he desired the council to approve of the following resolution, which he would move : "That this Council records its regret that Mr Higgins cannot see his way to reconsider, his resignation, and expresses appreciation of the splendid services rendered during his term of office. When Mr Higgins took over, conditions were in a state of chaos, but have under his able supervision, steadily improved until to-day a system obtains that is reflected in the confidence the ratepayers display in the Councils’ engineering department. On leaving to enter private practice, Mr Higgins takes with him the thanks of this Council for work well, done and its best wishes for his future welfare.” Cr. Hare seconded, and the .’notion was carried. Discussing the Plains County Council’s policy on roading schemes, the new county engineer said that the council should decide on the minimum amount of machinery required. There were numerous small roading schemes, nad these could be carried on simultaneously if there was a complete plant for each job. As this would be very bad business, the council should decide which job should be cleaned up first. 'A much better scheme would be to pool all the roading schemes and call tenders for a big job. The Turua Town Board had received tenders for its small work, and was to have it done without providing any machinery. A big contract, such as the county could let if it pooled all its schemes, could be let at a much less rate, and the county would not require any machinery whatever. The matter was not discussed but Cr. Hare said that he would object to cleaning up one rating area’s job before commencing another, as his riding would someday raise a loan, and it might be years before the work was commenced,

Owing to the boisterous .weather prevailing on Friday last there was not a very large attendance at the concert organised by the Turua Tennis Club. As the entertainment proved of outstanding merit, it was repeated on Monday evening to a large an.] appreciative audience. This is the first time that a concert has been held on two nigh-tis in Turua. As h result the tennis club funds are augmented to the extent of over £2O. The club has recently incurred heavy expenditure, and is looking to the bazaar, to be held on Friday, October 10—a week later than previously advertised—to further reduce the club’s overdraft. What kind of tobacco do you prefer —mild medium, or full ? If you have been long a worshipper at the shrine of My Lady Nicotine you have doubtless sampled all sorts of brands at one time or another, and have your But have you ever tried toas.ted tobacco ? It is quite a new idea. The leaf is carefully toasted, and this process develops the flavour and aroma in quire a surprising way. It’s like eating salt with or mustard with beef or cheese. You can test this for yourself because the New Zealand tobaccos, now so much in evidence, are all toasted. Hence their-delightful fragrance and flavour. And unlike most of the imported brands they contain such a small percentage of nicotine that they may be smoked pipe after pipe "till the cows come home ” without unpleasant or harmful consequences. They won’t bite the tongue, and appeal to all tastes. “ Riverhead Gold ’’ is aromatic, "Toasted Navy Cut” (Bulldog) a pleasing medium, and "Cut Plug No. 10” (Bull’s Head) a fine full-flavoured tobacco*
