ELECTRICITY V. OIL ENGINES.
Sir,—l noticed a statement in your paper awhile ago regarding the merits of Electric power for milking machines wherein it was given that it was cheaper to use the electric power than an oil engine. My experience is quite the reverse. This last season our butter-fat production was 96701 b, and it only cost us £l3 2s for motor spirit and lubricating oil. The cost to produce the same amount by electric power would have been about £2O 14s. I used a 2%-h.p. Anderson engine, a 4*-cow Ridd machine, 65-gallon separator, and skim-milk pump. I started using the machines early in August, when I had 12 cows in. and used them until the end of May, when the flood brought our season to an abrupt finish. W. H. CHEALE.
