A. & P. ASSOCIATION.
MEETING OF HAUBAKI BOOT. Thei annual meeting of the Hauraki A. and P. Association was held in the Soldiers’ Club, Paeroa, on Saturday evening last, the president, Mr W. F. Johnstone, presiding over an attendance of about twenty-five members. The following annual report was read by the secretary, Mr E. Edwards: “Your Committee have pleasure in presenting their annual report and baalnce-sheet for the year ending June 30, 1924. The finances in your books show a balance of 858 10s 6d on the year's working, but in reality the association is actually £7 8s 6d worse off than when it started operations for the year. The unpaid subscriptions and sundry debtors make a total of £207 3s. Some of this money has been paid since the drawing up of the balance-sheet, and a large proportion of it is recoverable, but the large amount of £l2B is shown as outrfa standing subscriptions. The society would be greatly benefited if members could see their way clear to pay up their subscriptions before June each year, as by so doing we would save money in bank interest, which this year amounted to £62 8s 6d. "As you all know, a two-days show was again held, and the success, justified the continuence of this practice. The entries were good, but fell a little short of the previous year, “The grand parade and show ring events were again a great attraction, and the class of animal exhibited would do credit to any show. “The competition in the cattle sections was keen, but there was a disappointing feature about these section, inasmuch as that there was no competition in the Friesian section, whereas that section previously has always been good. “The Captain Hubbard Memorial Shield was competed for by the Shorthorn breed', and was won by Mr S. Lye, of Newstead. It is indeed pleasing to record this fact, as Mr Lye has been a consistent and large exhibitor at the Show for a great number of years. The competition in the Shorthorn sections was exceptionally good last show. “The Jerseys were again very much in evidence, and with large entries and high quality stock to handle the judge had a difficult task in awarding the red ribbons. "Your Committee desire to express their thanks to ail those who worked so hard to make the show the success it was, and especially wish to thank the domain caretaker, Mr W. Hamilton, for his generous assistance. The judgeis who gave their assistance to the association are also to oe thanked for their services, and also the Jockey Club for the loan of hurdles and donations. “In conclusion ybur Committe earnestly request that all members will th’s year assist the association by paying all outstanding subscriptions and . l>y continuing to give their help to the show so that it may progress in keeping with the progress of the district.” The report was adopted. The balance-sheet caused a long tliscussion, and a number of questions concerning the various items of re- ' ccipts and expenditure were asked and explained by the auditor, Mr, G. E. Allen. In moving the adoption, Mr E. W. Porritt asked that the balance-sheet be taken in hand earlier next year, and that a clear and intelligible statement of accounts be presented so that members could Understand the position. Mr Porritt said that there was no doubt that the figures as presented were correct,' but the balance-sheet was a hopeless puzzle to the lay-mind. The balance-sheet was then adopted. P**’ ' MEMBERS' TICKETS. Arising out of a discussion on the large amount of outstanding members’ subscriptions, it was decided that in future no privilege tickets should be issued to members who were two years in arrears, and that notice to that effect be sent to each member. LUNCHEON TICKETS. A lengthy discussion took place with reference to the issue of free luncheon tickets. One member suggested that ’“♦Cno tickets should be issued on the first day of the show, while several other members spoke of the good name for hospitality that the association enjoyed and suggested that a very small amount would be saved, j Finally it was decided that the issue of tickets be left in the hands of the president and secretary, and that each person’s name should be written on the ticket. LUNCHEON BOOTH. It was decided that the arrangements for luncheon be similar to those of last year, and that public tenders be called for the rights ,of the booth. SHOW DATES. The dates for the forthcoming show were fixed for Wednesday and Thursday, November 26 and 27. . DONATIONS. . 1 Mr D. Sheehan, Paeroa, offered to donate £3 3k as a prize for the champion hack. Mr XV. F. Johnstone offered to provide sufficient green feed for the stock on both days. The offers were accepted with thanks. RING EVENTS. On the suggestion of Mr N. Beattie it was decided tb recommend to the incoming committee to increase the number of ring events on the first day of the show. CHARGES FOR SPACE. A member suggested that the charges for space for side-shows should be increased to 2s a foot. After discussion it was agreed not wfc. to increase the charges, as the side:‘p shows helped materially in attractnig people to the "Show. REDUCTION OF SALARY. In returning thanks for the manner in which the stewards and officials
had supported and helped him during his term as president Mr W. F. Johnstone said that it was a matter for regret that the associaiton was not in a better position financially, and he trusted that this year’s show would prove more successful. Touching on the question of finances, Mr Johnstone said he was of the opinion that the secretary’s ’salary might be reduced ■ all the same, he could not speak too highly of the services rendered to tha association by Mr Edwards, but the association was faced with liabilities, and the overdraft had to be reduced. Mr W. J. Hall said that provided the secretary was capable and gave the work his wholehearted support he was opposed to any reduction of salary, and thought that the pruning knife should be used in some other direction. Mr G. Buchanan said that the finances had to be seriously considered, and although the secretary was a good one, he did not see how the association could continue to pay £lOO a year. In his opinion the work bf the association only entailed about three months of the secretary’s time, and he suggested that the salary should •be fixed at the rate of £5 a week for three months. Mr Porritt said that when the amount had been increased to £lOO a year the return had justified the increase but the last few years the association had drifted back. On returning to the meeting Mr Edwards said that he considered the billet was worth the £lOO, but considering the state of the finances he would be willing to a reduction being made, but he would not undertake the duties for less than £75 a year. After further discussion it was agreed to pay that amount. OFFICIALS ELECTED. The following officials were elected for the ensuing year: Pation, Mr W. F. Johnstone ; president, Mr W. J.
