TURUA. * TENNIS CLUB. The annual meeting of the Turua Tennis Club was held last week, Mr G. J. Walker presiding over an attendance of about twenty members. The annual report and balancesheet were adopted, and the following committee was appointed: Messrs G. J. Walker, F. C. Robinson, A. C. Scott, F. Clotworthy, H. C. Luke, and the Rev. J. Beaufort (hon. secretary). The office bearers will be appointed by the committee, and the opening day was fixed for Saturday, October 11. The annual report stated that the first year had been satisfactory in every respect. The membership at the beginning of the season was 23. senior and five junior male members, and 20 senior and 4 junior lady members. The work of repairing the old courts was undertaken, and at ■ the same time negotiations were entered into for the purchase of land for new courts. Four sections were obtained from Messrs Bagnall Bros, for £l5O. An overdraft of £450 was obtained from the Bank of New Zealand, and the committee in this respect wished to place on record the club’s high appreciation of the assistance given by the residents of the district who generously came forward and assisted the dub by attaching their names to the bank guarantee. The committee trusted that their confidence was not misplaced. Practically all money obtained from the bank had been spent in laying down three new concrete courts. The work done on the courts by Mr J. Griffiths had been entirely satisfactory, and it only remained for all members to personally assist at the working bees and at the opening concert and bazaar in order to complete the good work. During the season the club A team won the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association’s A grade competition and the Laidlaw Cup, and the B team the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association’s B grade competition and the Hayward Shield. A member of the club, Mrs F. Clotworthy, won the ; ladies handicap singles in the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association’s tournamnt. The balance-sheet showed that the financial position of the club was satisfactory, and while more money was required the present committee wished to point out the urgent necessity of reducing the overdraft each year so that the financial burden would be gradually lightened, and the guarantors relieved of their liability. Finally the committee wished to place on record its high appreciation of the work done by the ladies of the club who had at all times come forward to help bear their share of the work in connection.with all social and other functions organised by the club, and the committee trusted that the sale of work which was to be held this month —thanks largely to their efforts—would be an unqualified success. KEREPEEHI. TENNIS CLUB. ' The annual meeting of the Kerepeehi Tennis Club was held in the hall on Monday evening, the president, Mr B. Frecklington, presiding over an attendance of about twenty membeis. Reporting on the past season’s operations, Mr Frecklington said that owing to the fact that the competitions had started before the club’s courts were opened the club had not particularly distinguished itself. However, after the new courts had been opened play improved, and several members succeeded in getting into the associations' competition semi-finals. For various causes the membership had fallen from 59 durnig the previous season to 34 during the past season. The incorporation of the club would be effected during the next few days. The balance-sheet for the season showed receipts totalling £5B 7s lid, including subscriptions, £26 7s, and proceeds of dances, £7 Is. The total expanditure was £33 3s Id, leaving a credit balance of £25 4s lOd, compared with £lB 14s 4d at the end of the previous season. The officers elected for the ensuing year were: President, Mr B. Frecklington (re-elected) ; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. Herkt and R. Hutchinson ; secretary and treasurer, Mr B. J. Loudon (re-elected) ; team selection committee, Messrs R. Hutchinson, B. Frecklington, and J. Kidd ; delegate to Hauraki Plains Tennis Association, Mr B. Frecklington ; executive committee, Messrs R. Fawcett, L. A. W. Bagnall, C. Hudson, Mrs Davies, and Miss Watene. After considerable discussion it was agreed that subscription rates remain unchanged. A working bee will be held on Saturday next. REPORTING POWER STOPPAGES. Several months ago the Kerepeehi Ratepayers’ Association made representations to the Thames Valley Power Board and eventually had a high tension telephone installed at the corner of the Kerepeehi-Wharepoa road and Turua-Netherton road, so that tne board’s troubleman. could be quickly communicated with in case of stoppages in the electric power. The association advised the board that Mr W. Booth, who resided nearby, would operate the telephone when necessary. Reporting to the association on Monday evening, Mr Booth said that he had recently been instructed how to use tlie telephone, and that farmers could communicate with him by ringing Turua 30W. The same service can be secured by communicating with the manager, Hauraki Plains Dairy Co. factory, Turua, or the depot, Ngatea.
