PAEROA DOMAIN BOARD.

MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Domain Board was held on Thursday night, Mr W. Marshall, presiding. DOMAIN IMPROVEMENTS. Mr J. W. Silcock, chairman of the committee appointed to go into the matter of improvements to the playing fields, reported that tenders had been called for the work of ploughing the area, but at the time of closing the tenders none had been received. However, two tenders had since come to hand, both of which were greatly in excess of the amount proposed to be spent on the work. Difficulty had also been experienced in obtaining a supply of 12in pipes for the open drain. The matter was referred back to the committee, with power to act. TENNIS COURTS. The Methodist Church Tennis Club applied for permission to use the vacam tennis court on a basis of fourpence a set, stating that if the privilege was granted the club would undertake to collect all fees. The chairman explained that the club aid not expect t.o hold any right to the court, and would be willing to give way at all times to the public. As the court was frequently idle and the club isuffered from an overflow of members at times, he thought that the request was a reasonable one, and one that would in no way interfere with the playing rights of the public. In reply to Mr Bain the chairman said that up to the present the club had kept strictly to the one court. After a brief discussion the request was gi anted in the terms of the application. PUBLIC CONVENIENCE. The Paeroa Bowling Club wrote drawing attention to .the insanitary state of the public convenience near the bowling green and asking that the matter receive attention. Mr Edwards said that the premises were in a disgusting state, and he considered the complaint was justified. The chairman stated that a sewer connection would be made as soon as funds permitted. The matter was referred to the committee, with power to act. BOWLING GREEN. The. Paeroa Bowling Club made formal application for the use of the bowling green under the usual conditions and asked the date when the green would be available for play. The chairman remarked that the cost of maintenance on the green had been steadily increasing, and he pointed out that the rental received from the club last year had been barely sufficient to meet the cost of upkeep. Mr Silcock contended that it would hardly be fair to base the rental for this season on the amount expended during the past season, as a great deal of extra work had been done. It was decided to authorise the superintendent to submit a date for the opening of the green and to hold the question of rental in abeyance until the next meeting. The chairman said he was strongly opposed to any suggestion that the ratepavers should be expected to contribute towards playing facilities for sports bodies. on the streets would have to be starved, as the council had already authorised considerable extraordinary expenditure out of that account. Cr, Flatt said he considered that the Mayor’s statement was not sincere, and that he was only trying to throw cold water on the scheme. The Mayor assured Cr. Flatt that he was doing nothing of the sort, but Cr, Flatt refused to accept the assurance and a rather heated passage of words followed, during which the Mayor said that he took strong exception to the remarks, and might with equal justice have said that or. Flatt’s opposition to tiiqs mailer scheme arose from the fact that the site was farther up the town. The amendment was then put and carried, the Mayor and Cr. Vuglar dissenting. Cr. Silcock moved a further amendment that the council consider the ways and means of borrowing £16,000 to build a municipal hall, offices, library, and restroom, Cr. Brenan objected on the grounds that a town hall was not necessary at the present juncture. The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder. As the resolution the former amendment was carried by one vote, the Mayor, Crs. Silcock, Lamb, and Vuglar dissenting. The Mayor then moved that the interest and sinking fund on the proposed loan of £4OOO be found by means of a special rate. Seconded by Cr. Silcock and carried. SEWERAGE CONNECTIONS. The Mayor moved that steps be taken to place before the ratepayers a proposal to borrow the sum of £2OOO for the purpose of financing propertyowners to connect with the sewerage scheme in terms of the provisions of section 228 of the Municipal Corporations Act, and that the rate of. interest. should not exceed six per cent., and the terms of the loan should not exceed ten years, and provision for erpaymsnt to be made by making all repayments by property-owners tb the council terminate in time to redeem the debentures at maturity, or if paid at an earlier date to appoint sinking fund commissioners if requested. The motion was carried unanimously.
