PAEROA BOROUGH.
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The regular meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held last night, His Worship the Mayor, Mr W. Mar.shall, presiding over Crs. T. P. Vuglar, H. M. Shand, G. P. Lamb, F, E. Flatt, P : E. Brenan. W- Bain, J. W. Silcock, E. Edwards, and .the town clerk, Mr W. C. Alexander. APPLICATION FOR RESERVE. R. Trotter, Paeroa, applied for a ten years’ lease of 8% acres of borough reserve on Thames Road and Bennett and Wolfe Street, which area, if granted, would be fenced, cleared, drained, and graissed. The Mayor said that the, leasing of municipal reserves could not be done for a longer term than one year without calling for public tenders. He was of the opinion that it would be unwise to tie the reserve up for a lengthy period, especially in view of the area being one of the best of the borough reserves. Cr. Edwards swid it would not pay to take the area for a year, and he favoured granting the application for a, term of one year, with the right of renewal for. a further term. Cr. Flatt concurred. Cr. Vuglar thought it would be advisable to hold the reserve for the use of borough horses. The matter was deferred for further consideration. • KAURI RESERVE. The Ohinemuri County Council wrote advising that the Minister for Lands had been written to and asked to take steps to have an area of land bearing kauri trees at Karangahake proclaimed a forest and scenic reserve. It was decided to support the request. HOSPITAL TRUST FUND. The Thames Hospital Board wrote asking the amount of cash in the Nurse Pennell Memorial Fund, and also in the Hauraki District Comforts Committee Fund. —The information to be supplied. SALE OF CHURCH PROPERTY. The committee of St. Andrew’s Church, Paeroa, wrote stating that it required the small rectangular portion of the present road vested in the church property trustees and included in the present title. The letter stated that the committee was not agreeable to accepting any exchange of land, but was willing to sell the piece of land required by the council for the sum of £lO, the council to pay all expenses, move the fences, and straighten the southern corner boundary to the King Street corner and give a residue .title. Accepted-. PART SECTIONS FOR ROADING. The Lands Office, Auckland,, forwarded a tracing of part sections 10 and 11. showing various proposals in connection with the Paeroa Domain. The area proposed to be taken was shown to contain 1 rood 7 perches. The letter stated that if sufficient informtvion was supplied the plans for the taking of the area would be prepared by the Lands Office, and if the trustees of the Presbyterian Church and the mortgagee, Mr E. N. Miller, Thames, were agreeable-to the proposal, the area could be proclaimed a road under section 11'of the Land Act, 1908, with the consent of the interested parties. ' The Mayor stated that the survey data was being collected, and would be forwarded to the Lands Office, and it was agreed to. carry out the work in conjunction with the purchase of the area from the Presbyterian Church trustees. HIRING OF CONVEYANCES. The Department of Internal -Affairs forwarded a copy of an. Ordei-in-Council, under the Municipal Corporations Act, giving councils power to incur the cost “of conveyance of councillors to their homes in certain cases when the ordinary public'means of conveynace were not available. TAYLOR’S AVENUE. The Chief Engineer of the Railway Department telegraphed that he had instructed the district engineer to push on with the construction of Taylor’s Avenue, but the department considered that the council’s price was too high for the filling. The Mayor said that the telegram indicated the completion of many months of negotiations with the Railway Department.. The position now was that for the purpose of a road the department had taken the portion of Mr G. Deans’ property necessary to connect Taylor’s Avenue with Hill Street, The department had given an undertaking Taylor’s Avenue for its whole, length to Hill Street the full width of a chain.’ road and to be filled in to flood level. The carriageway was to be metalled., for a width of thirty feet, and a sixt'een-feet footpath formed on the eastern side of the road The path was to be kerbed and channelled in concrete. A concrete culvert of su cient capacity would* be provided over the outfall drain. The whole of the work was to be done at the department’s expense, and to the satisfaction of the council’s requirements and specifications. “This must be regarded as a satisfactory arrangement, and one of considerable benefit to the ratepayers,” concluded the Mayor. CLOSING OF HILL STREET. The Chief Enginee, N.Z. Railways, forwarded a copy of the proclamation closing Hill Street and taking land for railway purposes. HOSPITAL SITE. The Lands and Survey Office, Auckland, advised that a draft clause for insertion in the Washing-up Bill for the purpose of closing portions of Russell, Fraser, and Johnson streets, and giving effect .to the council’s proposals in connection with the Paeroa Cottage Hospital site, had been forwarded to the Under-Secretary for Lands. It was decided to convey the council’s appreciation to the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the valuable assistance given in the matter, and also to accord a vote of thanks to Cr. Branan for his efforts in the matter as the council’s representative on the Thames Hospital Board. Cr. Brenan briefly acknowledged the recognition pf his services and stated
that so far ae the board was concerned the plans for the Paeroa hospital had been finalised, and he hoped to see tenders called for the work of erection of the building within six months. CORONATION STREET. The district engineer, N.Z. Railways, wrote intimating that the department was prepared to dedicate for road purposes a portion of the railway reserve from Hill Street to Coronation Street provided an undertaking was given that the latter street was formed up to the proper level and metalled. It was decided to accept dedication of the road on the conditions submitted. MOORE STREET DRAIN. Cr. Flatt asked if instructions could be issued to have the drain cleaned in Moore Street. —Referred to the foreman. MAIN OUTFALL DRAIN; Cr. Edwards drew attention to the main cutfall drain near the Rye Lane, bridge. It was blocked with debris and the water was overflowing on to the low levels. —Referred to the foreman.
