DISTRICT NEWS.

KARANGAHAKE PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL On Friday evening last a very successful plain and fancy dress ball and euchre tournament was held in the Public Hall, Karangahake, the object being to raise funds to defray expenses for the upkeep o£ the Roman Catholic Church. The hall was crowded, visitors being present from Waihi, Waikino, and Paeroa. The The music was in the capable hands of Mr F. Clarke. The evening opened with the grand march, many couples in fancy dress taking part. The judges —Mesdamse McGruer and Ainsley and Mr W. Bramble—were set a hard task for many original and beautiful costumes were displayed. The successful competitors proved to be: Ladies : Miss K. Tierney (“ Yes. we have no bananas ”), 1; Miss N. Mead (Queen of the Harem), 2. Children: Girls : Iris O’Brien (Christinas Tree) and Thelma Clarke (Moth) ; boys: E. Maunder (Black Cat) 1, M. Clarke (Karangahdke footballer) 2. The winners of the euchre tournament were Mrs J. darken and Mr J. Fleming. The following also appeared in fancy costume :— Misses M. Tierney, Good Luck ; A. Hughes, 80-Peep; N. McLeod, Hauraki Plains Gazette; M. O’Neil, Pierrot; A. O’Neil, Jazz Handkerchief ; N. Neil, No More Strikes ; B. Neil, Speight’s Ale; J. Johnson, Jockej ; M. Williams, Cherry; M.
